TBC Tip #228: Orthomosaic from Facades Command

By Anna Zapel posted 12-12-2024 13:45

Hello TBC’ers! In this tip, we’re jumping into the new Orthomosaic from Facades Command! This workflow is especially useful for accurately documenting building exteriors, creating detailed facade maps for inspections, or generating high-resolution images for architectural and construction purposes. Creating an orthomosaic from facades allows for precise and detailed visual representation of vertical structures. So let’s jump into it!

To begin this workflow, import and process your drone images into TBC within a defined geo-referenced coordinate system and follow these steps:

  1. In the Photogrammetry tab, navigate to the Deliverables group and click "Create Orthomosaic from Facade."

  1. In the command pane, click on the selection box beside “Name:” to set a name for the exported deliverable.

  2. Under the “Plane” drop down click “<New…>” to create a plane for your facade.

  1. In the Plane Manager, create a new plane and select how you would like to define your plane. I personally like to use “Three points” or "Vertical plane” for facades. In these options, select points on your facade in the selection boxes next to each point: “Point 1,” “Point 2,” etc. You can also select a point to define the position of this plane which can be useful for more jagged facades. Once finished select “Close.”

  1. Under the image rectangle properties, clip your orthomosaic image by setting corners in the “Corner one:” and “Corner two:” selection boxes. This will clip your image rectangle to a specific desired area.

  1. Next, you will define the clipping depth. The clipping depth property ensures that all of the points on your facade are included while excluding any points that are outside of the facade analysis area. Amidst the clipping depth by clicking in the selection box under “Clipping depth:” and input a measurement that fits your dataset.

  1. Pixel size will fill automatically. Click “Create.”

  2. Once the image is generated in the process view you can import it into your project and view the final result by clicking on the “Import” button in the Process View.

By following these steps, you will create a precise orthomosaic from your facade images. This detailed visual representation can greatly enhance your documentation and analysis capabilities. Happy mapping!
