TBC Tip #242: Creating a Mask for Scan Colorization

By Anna Zapel posted 04-02-2025 08:53

Hello TBCers! Do you know how to create a mask for scan colorization of mobile mapping datasets in TBC? Colorizing laser point clouds using RGB values from imagery taken by your mobile mapping system can enhance the visualization of your data. To do this, you need to create a Mask that covers any undesirable areas, objects, and obstructions visible on the images so that the color information found on them will not be used for the colorization.

To begin this workflow, open your TBC project with your processed mission trajectories:

  1. Select the Generate Scans command under the Mobile Mapping tab in the Processing group.

  1. Under the “Scan Configuration” window in the Generate Mobile Mapping Scans command you will see the “Colorize Points with panoramic view” option. Check this box.

  1. If there is no Mask available in the current project, you will need to create one. Click Generate. The Mask file will be saved then under the VCE project folder.

    1. Note: You can use a mask coming from another project created using the same capture system settings by copying the masked images into the appropriate project folder or pointing to that folder in the Folder selection box. However, the capture system settings must be exactly the same.

  1. 6 PGM files are created, one for each camera of the 360° camera. Using a third party image editing software such as Irfanview, or GIMP, open a PGM format file.

  1. Color over the problem area using a fill color with 0,0 and 0 as RGB values. Note: Do not rotate the PGM format files clockwise when coloring the unwanted area. Doing so may compromise the result of the colorization.

  1. Save the image using the same file name and location, overwriting the original PGM image file.

  2. Repeat for all images. For images of just the sky or just the top of your collection vehicle you can skip.

  3. Click Process.
