Keyboard Shortcuts - Did You Know ...

  • 1.  Keyboard Shortcuts - Did You Know ...

    Posted 05-13-2019 16:38

Did you know that Keyboard Shortcuts are stored with your Custom Menu Configuration (Support - Customize Menus - Export / Import). This means that if you want to create and save all of your shortcuts you should

    1. Import your Custom Menu
    2. Add all of your Shortcuts ti your system
    3. Export your Custom Menu

Now when you load your Custom Menus you will also load your Custom Keyboard Shortcuts.

If you are interested in having us create more Keyboard Shortcuts in the system, please provide me with your list of Commands that you have shortcuts assigned to and what those shortcut key combos are. You can generate an Excel Report of your current setup from the Define Command Shortcuts command and post it to your responses here.

I will take a look through what we get back and see if there are common themes / settings etc. and if Yes I will try to get some of those commands set to the commonest values - or at worst will come back to you all with some suggestions that you can look at.

    Examples

    • CTRL A = Select All
    • CTRL B = Break
    • CTRL C = Copy
    • CTRL D = Delete

    • CTRL SHIFT F = Offset Line
    • CTRL SHIFT L = Label Alignment
    • CTRL SHIFTY O = Options

    CRTL V : Variable Offest

    CRTL E: for change Elevation

CRTL L: Create linestring, I find myself using this command more than the layer manager

May I suggestion keeping Ctrl +c and Ctrl +v as the standard windows cut and paste for text. I tried swapping this out for copy objects and variable offset and albeit they were useful, I found that I missed the copy and paste of text especially when drafting and using smart text. Plus muscle memory from other programs.

Perhaps Ctrl Shift V for variable offset. For the copy command, maybe Ctrl +D (for duplicate) and change delete to the delete key.

yea I agree with Pat here. Ctrl X, Ctrl C and Ctrl V should be kept as standard cut, copy, paste shortcuts.

I found that if Iapply CTRL V for Variable Offset Line that when I try e.g.

to Copy (CTRL C) and Paste (CTRL V)from Excel into a Corridor or Sideslope

Template that CTRL V fails and runs the Variable Offset Command forcing me

to use Right Click Paste instead in TBC - I think that CTRL SHIFT V for

Variable offset Line and leaving CTRL V undefined would be better - would

    you guys agree?

DEL has the same issue - you want to be very careful on that one I found

out to my cost - because there are times when you use the Delete key to

edit text fields and if you have it set to Delete then it will delete

selected objects - so I would not recommend that one at all - keep Delete

    set to CTRL D

    Alan,

Great post, thanks for the screen grab its going on my wall

You are the man of automation!

I'm still customising my gaming mouse.

Next step will be getting braille on the keyboard?

    Cheers

Can I put in a vote? I think some voice assistant action would be great. "J.A.R.V.I.S., lift that building 2 feet."  Real Tony Stark stuff.

Image result for tony stark jarvis

But for real, voice integration could be useful.Trim, join, merge. This would save the user from hunting and pecking. In most cases the user knows the commands they want to use, the trouble can be activating them them quickly and efficiently. Plus there are only some many key combinations that can be maintain and stay somewhat logical.

Another idea that is pretty cool and could be useful

If you work in a closed room all alone then Speech Recognition already works today Pat - using Windows Speech Recognition you can run commands etc using Voice Only already.

I just ran it and you can say Break and the Break Command opens, you can say Tab to Tab between fields and Close to close the command (followed by 2 OK to execute).

This could be a production boost for sure but likely pretty annoying for your neighbors

So don your Iron Man Suit, make sure you have your power cell plugged in and go at it ....

Let me know how you like it

I can see it now .....

The suit would get me from job to job a heck of a lot faster.

Plus who doesn’t like lasers? It would help with ledge removal.

I will scope this out. Thanks

I might be missing something but did this change with 5.10. I believe the Customize Menus is now Customize Tools but I am not seeing a Support Customize- Tool -  Import/Export. Just a save and laod and not sure where this would be saving too.

The customization of the Menu Ribbons is called Customize Ribbon. Once

customized you can use the Set Ribbon Tabs command to turn individual

Ribbons On and Off in the Menus. If you want to Customize the Quick Access

toolbar or the Shortcuts - they are part of the Customize Ribbon command

(stored with an Exported Menu Ribbon). If you want to Customize the Side

toolbars that is the Customize Tools command. Nothing has changed in 5.1

I know I'm jumping in late here, but it drives me nuts that there is no shortcut to turn on and off snaps. Unless I am wrong.

    Hi Matt,
Something shorter than clicking "Snap" on the bottom bar? Can you help me understand why that doesn't work for you?

well its three clicks actually, one to open the window, one to uncheck, and one to close. very annoying when autocad just has the f3 function set to toggle it off and on. i turn off and on snaps alot because the grips get annoying popping up all over the place.

I see. To define a shortcut for that, choose Snap Mode as the command and choose any shortcut in the drop down menu you like. Currently in v5.81, F3 is assigned to CAD Command Line by default, but you can change it to another shortcut (or set to "None") and choose F3 for Snap Mode if that's your preference.

It was a nice feature to add snap menu to be opened anywhere with a keyboard shortcut, but it would really be nice if you could have multiple snap presets that you switch with keyboard shortcuts. I think it's way too much time to have to switch between different snap types. Or I think Autocad allows you to do shortcuts for snap overrides. So if you need a near snap, hit the shortcut and you can have only near snap or whatever one you want. I always felt it took far too long to go down to the snap button, the shortcut helps but I always felt there should have been commands in TBC that allow snap overrides.

Also, one other thing that drives me absolutely bananas is that the snaps reset every time you have a new template. So you can't save snaps with the template, not even sure if they save when you open the file back up. The new Vector snap was added to the default and while vector snaps are HUGE, we don't normally use them so every time we open a project they're on. I know it sounds small but at the speed our team is trying to go in order to get these models out, any unnecessary clicks or moving the mouse adds time and frustration.

@Charlie Sorg  This suggestion, while helpful, does not address the "toggle snap" question raised and does nothing more then bring up the snap settings box.

Is there functionality in TBC to quickly and simply toggle all of the running snaps on and off with a single press? If not then it should be considered as it would certainly be helpful. (i.e. holding "x" while mouse'ing disables all running snaps)

No kidding, been saying this forever. Makes it even worse that TBC does not handle snaps very well. It's simple things like this that have been suggested many times but never get implemented that could really increase productivity and make TBC enjoyable to use. Sure it's just a few clicks... Xs the hundreds of times you do it in a week. Things like this, the unbelievably slow layer manager and many others I've given up hope on getting fixed. -You just go pay a 3rd party a subscription fee if you want simple features that work properly.-
