    Hello,

We are having issues with our current iPhone 13 pro max phones and overheating during the summertime. The screen gets very dark and is difficult to see. Looking for input on rugged devices/smart phones for field use in coordination with ESRI Field Maps and Trimble DA2 Antenna?

    Thanks!

Just a suggestion, I have been using the Juniper Systems - Cedar CT8X2 rugged android tablet using ESRI field maps, Trimble Mobile Manager and DA2 antenna with dependability and very good results. This tablet has really good battery life and built for extreme environments. Available through some Trimble authorized dealers.

Agreed. We have plenty of these in stock. Feel free to check our website out at allterracentral.com. We also have the TDC6.

I second Vince's suggestion. We have been using the Cedar CT8X2 for a few years now and don't have any issues. I believe we paid $999 for them.

How does it hold up to high temps? Has there been any issue with it being Android 10?

    Carson,

I have not had any problems with this Cedar CT8X2 being an Android device.  I sometimes have worked in 95-100°f conditions and have not had any issues with overheating. The air is very dry here in Wyoming so I don't know what would happen when combining high temperatures and high humidity, this may affect the tablets performance. I also have a cloth cover around my tablet, this cover may help protect it from dust and direct sunlight.

Hi Carson, I can recommend the Trimble TDC6 ruggedized Android device

We use a CT8X2 and for the money, it has been good. Currently being used in SW Florida. It did give us some trouble at first but then it was fine. That trouble wasn't heat related.

Send me a PM if you want information on other ruggedized tablet sized field computers. I don't sell them but had to read up on them.

I would consider reviewing the history of cellular connectivity issues with the TDC650 before buying a TDC6. Then review the history of the same issue with the TDC150. It seems Trimble puts inadequate cellular radios in their equipment, starting with the TDC150 (really, it's probably part of a System on a Chip).  We had to get service from a company called DAC to make the TDC150 work reliably.

The last reliable data collection device made by Trimble for the GIS Mapping market was the Geo7x.

Sorry to be mr. negative but no one else is saying it.

We have had continuous issues with the TDC650 as well.  The Geo7x we previously had worked much better.

We had to modernize due to the type of data collection we are performing. We used the GEO7xs for years for GIS mapping and they just don't cut it for our purposes. We initially purchased TDC600's but they had issues of their own, so we settled for iPhones because of the user-friendly nature, storage capacity and photo capabilities when compared to Trimble devices.

We have had good luck using the Samsung Tab Active 3 Tablets with the Trimble DA2 Antenna.  They have 8-inch screens are IP68 rated and meet the MIL STD 810H specs.  They hold up well in extreme heat and cold temperatures.  We have had them for a couple of years and now Samsung has the Tab Active 4 and 5 out with the same ratings and specs.

@Luis Mercado - would you mind telling me where (country, city) you are using Samsung Tab Active 3 Tablets? I'm interested in terms of heat and humidity tolerance.

National Park Service has many Samsung Galaxy Tab Active3 (WIFI), some with SIMS across our nations "hot and humid zones".  Can't say I can weigh in on operations in those environments up here, but they are serving quite well with 5000mAH battery (not hot swappable :> though).  Currently at Android v 13.  With lights down, WIFI off, BT on, I can squeeze 8 hours on average in outside temps hovering in the 50-60 degree range. Autonomous GNSS chip (no WAAS) puts you in the 2 meter range.   Not that folks are using the chipset (for simple, uncomplicated work), but I tested the Trimble 600 series and agree with the USFS accuracy tests.   USDA Forest Service Global Positioning System: MTDC Accuracy Reports with no real difference between the TDC600 and Tab Active3.  The bluetooth connections are reasonable with all sorts of receivers (not tested with DA1 or DA2).

    Paul,

The tablets performed well last two summers primarily deployed in Mineral County Nevada, USA with daytime temperatures ranging from 80-95 degrees F with low humidity (<30%).  More recently deployed in the Midwest in Oklahoma with daytime temperatures ranging from 75-97 degrees F and humidity ranging from 50-80%.  They definitely outperform any standard IOS or Android phone or Tablet that don't have the IP68 and MIL STD 810H specs.
