Renaming Points

I feel like I'm missing something basic about renaming points in TBC.

Say I have a large number of points with duplicate names, and some without:

Point1

Point1

Point2

Point2

Point3

Point4

etc...

They aren't the same point by co-ordinate, only by name.  And I don't need to merge them, just give them unique ID's without losing the 'point' part of the name.

If I run the select duplicate points command, and select all the points with duplicate ID's, it selects all examples of the duplicate named points, not just the first example. Then when you run the rename command to add a constant to the end of each point ID to make it unique, it doesn't consider the fact that it will be renaming the point to another point name which already exists.  For the example above, it runs the operation as:

Point1  -->  Point2

Point1  -->  Point2

Point2  -->  Point3

Point2  -->  Point3

Is there a way to get TBC to rename the points by a constant, but by checking each point individually?. e.g.

Point1 --> Is there another Point1? Yes -- > Cant be point2 --> Cant be point3 --> etc. --> CAN be point 5

Next Point1 --> Is there another Point1? No --> stay Point1

Or some other logical workflow to the same effect that I'm overlooking?
