Enhancement request: allow VHF connection

  • 1.  Enhancement request: allow VHF connection

    Posted 05-19-2022 10:05

Many of us without internet in the field remain stuck with autonomous or WAAS augmentation, but are hindered to take advantage of a Base running nearby spitting out RTK precise augmentation. Since Field Maps cannot PP it makes sense to leverage TMM with VHF capabilities!

hi precision GIS remains elusive for many.

thanks for the opportunity to promote this idea.

    Hi Joel,

Thanks for the feedback. Could you let me know a little more about the mobile device you have TMM running on, and what VHF radio you will be using to communicate with the base? As Field Maps communicates directly with the receiver it would be a challenge for TMM to provide the correction source, so Field Maps would need an update too, I'm keen to make sure I understand the request fully though before forming any opinions!

    Many thanks,

    Hi Mark,
I'll try to explain, but I don't want to box this request into any one radio, any one device since were talking almost the entire suite of Geodetic gear Trimble sells.

    Receivers - R8, R10, R12's
Controllers - any Android (like the TSC5)
Radios - A TDL450 external radio, or NOT.  Any of the receivers above tansmit VHF stand-alone - and is likely the most common scenario.

I have a Base station on control (or not), transmitting VHF corrections (RTK).   A rover (any of the above) running on an Android controller suitable for ESRI Field Maps, could then lock onto that signal, pass it thru TMM (TMM in my mind is the middle ware that could simply engage with a VHF signal) and pass that corrected RTK signal into Field maps.

I hope this helps.  What were trying to do is use Trimble Survey gear in a Field Maps scenario.  Were spitting out mm precision data from a base, via VHF, and want to use that in our FM's.  Currently all that expensive gear where internet, is unavailable in the field is wasted.
