Mapping and GIS Solutions Community

Is anybody else experiencing poor performance with TDC 600s and ESRI Field Apps (Field Maps and Survey123)? Below are a few examples. The issues are not encountered on Android 11 smart phones or any iOS devices that have been tested thus far.

1) Survey123 is slow to open and crashes frequently.
2) In some Field Maps, location symbol lags behind on-the-ground movement significantly by 5-15 seconds.
3) Field Maps crashes 5 or 6 times a day per user on long 8-10 hour field days.
4) Significant gaps in location tracks using the Location Tracking feature of Field Maps.
5) While offline, Survey123 and Field Maps randomly sign out or prompt user to sign in resulting in disabled maps and survey forms.

Our organization's workflows require field staff to work offline exclusively, often in remote locations. Most data collected are points and tracks. We use constraints, conditional field display, and autocalculation in Field Maps forms and Survey 123 forms.

Apologies for the delay in getting a response to you. Are the issues you are seeing on the new TDC600 with Android 10, or on the older model, or both? Also, are you using the integrated GPS, or using an external receiver?

I'm also interested to understand if you have posted the same questions in the Esri community?

Mark, thanks for the response. We are using the integrated GPS with SBAS enabled. The crashes, sign out issue, and track gaps are occurring on both models in Field Maps while the Survey123 performance is only an issue in the new Android 10 model.

I have posted on Geonet about this and submitted help tickets to ESRI. They were able to reproduce the Survey123 slow performance on a TDC Android 10 and suggested some settings for the location tracking which improved their quality but gaps still happen. They suggested I reach out to Trimble.

It's worth keeping up your dialog with Esri as the crashes and sign out issues do sound like they need to be investigated further from that perspective.

Thanks Mark, someone for the support team reached out to me about the Survey123 crashes. See below for an example of Field Maps location tracking quality issues.

In the attached map, the yellow is an actual approximate walked path. Blue lines are the Location Tracking lines and green arrows the location tracking points labeled by horizontal accuracy in feet (as determined by the app). If you look at the scale bar you will notice that actual variation is much larger than what is reported from the Trimble TDC. 

The Trimble TDC internal GPS was used with SBAS and GNSS enabled.

For those following this thread we have been working with ESRI on this to resolve the Survey 123 Issues (specifically #1 and #5 ) which are not specific to the TDC600v2, In a future release
The FieldMaps issue require escalation to the ESRI development teams
