Hello TBC’ers! Often in underground mining, we need to build vertical shafts for ventilation, access, and material transportation among many other functions! This is supported through surveying work especially in verification. So today, we’re diving into TBC’s vertical shafts verification tools. Using TBC, you can ensure that constructed vertical shafts align with design specifications, detect any deviations between the as-built condition and the design, and generate detailed reports documenting the verification process and results.
To begin this workflow, import the scan data of the vertical shaft into TBC and and follow these steps:

Create a vertical shaft by following the tunnel creation workflow under the “Tunnels” tab in the “Create” group or import one from an existing CAD file.

Create an as-built model from your point cloud scan data. Under the “Tunnels” tab on the top ribbon, click the “As-Built Mesh” button in the “View” group.

Create an Inspection Map. Now that a vertical shaft and as-built are created, we can jump into the inspection tools. Under the “Tunnels” tab on the top ribbon, click the “Inspection Map” button in the “View” group to compare the design to the vertical shaft as-built to analyze any deviations.

Under the “Base mesh:” selection box, input the vertical shaft design and under the “Comparison mesh:” selection box, input the as-built mesh. Click “OK.”

This will compute the difference between the design and the as-built into a color-coded inspection map visualization.The colors in an inspection map for tunnels are used to visually represent the deviations between a base mesh and a comparison mesh. Dark blue indicates that the comparison mesh cell is outside the corresponding base mesh cell tolerance, representing an overbreak while bright red indicates that a comparison mesh cell is inside the corresponding base mesh cell tolerance, representing an underbreak. Light gray indicates that a mesh cell's delta value could not be computed due to missing data.

Explore more in Inspection View. Click the “Inspection View” button in the “View” group to show and hide different views such as the Plan View, Cross-Section View, and Delta View. By moving the slider on the bottom pane, the inspection views will show detailed information about the tunnel at each point and plane.

Inspection Plan View shows you the colors in an inspection map for tunnels are used to visually represent the deviations between a base mesh and a comparison mesh. These colors help identify areas of overbreak and underbreak, which are crucial for assessing the quality and accuracy of tunnel construction.

Cross-Section View allows you to zoom in to see the deltas of the design relative to the as-built mesh.

Delta View dives deeper into the deltas and shows the unevenness or smoothness of the shotcrete application or excavation layer at a specific point in the tunnel. It can also tell you how thick the application of the shotcrete was at a specific section.

Create reports. Under the Reports section of the Tunnels tab, you will find the report options for this tunnel such as an As-Built Report or a Tunnel Inspection Report.

Click on “Tunnel As-Built” and then click on “Tunnel As-Built Report” which will show the deviations between the design and as-built data, information on individual points, and volumes or areas.

Click on “Inspection” and then click on “Tunnel Inspection Report” that shows hot spots that may be out of tolerance as well as statistics about the inspection including volumes, areas, and deviations. These are useful for determining construction progress and quality.

By following these steps, you can ensure that your vertical shafts are constructed accurately and meet design specifications, providing confidence in the quality of your construction projects.
