TBC Tip #230: Automatic Lane Line Extraction

By Anna Zapel posted 01-03-2025 13:41

Hello TBC’ers! Happy New Year! Today we’re talking about the automated lane line extraction tool. The automation of the lane line markings extraction allows users to create lines that trace lane line markings with minimal manual input. The tool can be used within the “Inspect Pavement Condition” command to isolate the analysis area. This feature streamlines the process of creating accurate road markings for various applications, saving time and increasing the precision of your deliverables.

To begin this workflow, import and process your Trimble Mobile Mapping data and follow these steps:

  1. In the Point Clouds tab navigate to the Extraction group and click the “Extract Line Feature” command.

  2. Under Extraction type, select “Lane Line Markings” and click the “Automatic (Mobile Mapping)” option.

  1. Under Data Extraction, click on the selection box beside “Select a Run” and select your run either through the Plan View or Project Explorer. Optionally, you can select a subset of the run by checking the “Select run subset” option. Click the box beside the “Select start location” and click your desired start location in the Plan View. The same applies for the “Select end selection”.

  1. After selecting the run, you can start extracting the lane lines by clicking on the “Extract” button. In the Settings drop down you can select from 3 checkboxes:

    1. Refine: When the lane lines are extracted, they will be refined by aligning and centering them to match the painted lane lines. Selecting this process increases the processing time by approximately 50%.

  1. Classify: This setting classifies and segments the lines into the following 4 classifications: solid lines, double solid lines, dashed lines, and double dashed lines.

  1. Create line node points: This setting will create new points at specific locations along the extracted lane line segments.

  1. You can filter the lines that will be created under “Filtering”. Using the slider, you can limit the extraction in two filters:

    1. Distance from trajectory. The quality of the lane lines generated becomes substandard the further they are from the trajectory. This filter eliminates lane lines that are far from the trajectory and are poorly extracted.

    2. Removing short lane lines. Deep learning occasionally produces artifacts which are falsely detected lines. These lines are usually short and can be eliminated using this simple filter.

  1. Select “Create Lines” and you have now extracted lane line markings automatically.

By following these steps, you can efficiently extract lane lines from point cloud data, ensuring high accuracy and consistency in your road marking projects.
