Tip #201 - Create and Edit Feature Definitions

By Cole Schubert EXT posted 06-09-2023 16:02

Hello TBC’ers! The GIS tab in the TBC ribbon is a powerful tool and contains many common workflows. One of these workflows is creating and editing new feature definitions which can be used to highlight specific data within your project visualization and collect and store attribute data for connections to survey databases or other systems of records (SoR). If you have a feature library (FXL) file already in your project, you can create and modify feature definitions directly in the project explorer tab.

   1. To create a new feature definition in an already existing category, right click on the desired category and select “New” and the corresponding data type for the new feature definition (point, line, polygon, etc.)

    2. Once created, the new feature will appear as “Name (Code)” under the selected category (Utility, in this case). To modify the feature and add identifying details, right click the new feature and select properties. Here you can edit the name, code, style, and visibility.

   3. Use the “Style” section of the feature editor to select pre-existing visualization options, or select “<<New Layer>>” (3.a) to customize a new category of display options in the pop-up layer manager window. Use the Label Style to change what attributes are displayed along with the layer (3.b)

   4. In the project explorer pane, right click on the newly created feature to open a selection of customization options. Select new attributes to add various types of data about the new feature, such as time, size, condition, and many more (4.a). Select “New Symbol” to customize the visualization of your feature with standard options, or import your own unique symbol (4.b).

   5. With these steps complete, all that is left is to assign this new feature definition to your data. In the project explorer pane, right click on the data you want to edit and select properties (5.a). Select the browse button on the right side of the feature code cell (5.b), which opens the feature code editor. From here, select the applicable feature code and then click the “Add Code” button (5.c). This will assign the feature code you created to the data, and will update the display after clicking the “Process Sources” button in the Process Feature Code pane (5.d).

   6. Using these steps, you can create new feature definitions or edit pre-existing ones to best visualize your GIS data!
