TBC Tip #203 - Point Cloud Generation from Imagery

By Cole Schubert EXT posted 06-23-2023 10:25

Hello TBC’ers! One of the many useful aspects of TBC is the versatility and variety of tools within one software package. This week’s tip is a quick and easy breakdown of a point cloud generation workflow from the photogrammetry tab. Using these steps, any user can turn their high resolution imagery into a dense point cloud (.las file) suitable for all types of geospatial workflows.

  1. To get started with this workflow, click on the Photogrammetry tab at the top of your screen, and then click the “Create Deliverables” button (1a).

  2. This will open the create deliverables pane on the right side of your screen, and contains all the parameters needed to generate a point cloud from your imagery. Here you have the option to choose the flight mission (2a), choose a boundary for your point cloud (2b), elevation type (2c), point cloud density (2d), choose orthomosaic settings (2e), and more.

  3. Once your desired settings have been chosen, click the create button at the bottom of the “Create Deliverables” pane. This will open a new window called “Process View” that monitors the progress of the point cloud generation.

  4. When this process is complete, in the same pane it will say “Success. Ready to import.” Select import and your newly created point cloud will be imported directly into your plan view.

  5. Back in plan view, you can use the view filter manager to toggle between visualizing the imagery or the point clouds (5a), and the point cloud workflows will now be selectable (5b).

  6. That's it! This easy to use workflow will enhance the versatility of your high resolution imagery and enable greater spatial analysis, all within TBC!
