TBC Tip #206 - Change Coordinate System

By Cole Schubert EXT posted 07-14-2023 10:31

Hello TBC’ers! For this week’s tip, we are going to cover changing the coordinate system of a photogrammetry project. While this is not the only way to change a coordinate system (see more information here: Tip #18) this method is particularly useful for UAS data. It is essential that any UAS project has the correct coordinate system information to ensure accurate deliverables. However, some datasets may not have been labeled properly or could be changed to a more local and precise configuration.

  1. To start, click on the “Photogrammetry” tab at the top ribbon (1a). Then click on the “Change Coordinate System” button in the “Setup” section (1b).

  2. The “Change Coordinate System” manager should pop-up, and give you three options. The first allows you to search for a coordinate system by name, county, or EPSG ID which is useful for finding specific or local coordinate systems (2a). The second option breaks the coordinate systems into groups, and then by zone (2b). The last option is the default projection (Transverse Mercator) (2c). The default projection option also allows you to set other parameters such as automatically calculating projection settings, selecting a South azimuth system, and more (2d).

  3. If you choose the “Coordinate System and Zone” (2b) option, you will also be able to select a horizontal datum, or enter in your own new datum. Regardless of which method of changing the coordinate system you choose, the next step will be to define the geoid. This helps create a consistent elevation model that will improve deliverable accuracy such as creating a DTM. Your options are to select “No Geoid Model”, or select a predefined one within TBC (3a). Change the geoid quality (3b) and name (3c) to your desired settings, and the click finish to complete the workflow.

  4. After clicking finish, the tool will run and change the coordinate system of the data if there are no errors. From here, continue on to the rest of your workflow knowing you will have a more accurate and higher quality deliverable!
