TBC Tip #209 - Feature Extraction Tree

By Cole Schubert EXT posted 08-11-2023 01:26

Hello TBC’ers! This week’s tip is a breakdown of the new feature extraction tree. With the recent TBC 5.90 release, the whole interface for stockpile extraction from point clouds was added to the "Project Explorer" view to improve the user experience and increase usability! One of the tools that takes advantage of this new interface is the automated stockpile extraction (TBC Tip #202), but more is coming soon! Feature Extraction is an exciting area of development at Trimble, so keep an eye out for any new updates here to stay up to date!

  1. The best place to start this tip is naturally at the beginning, which would be how you interact with the data itself! After extracting features, (stockpiles in this example) two new nodes will appear in the project explorer pane called “Feature Extraction” (1A) and “Surfaces” (1B). Under the feature extraction node is a nested branch called “Stockpiles” (1C), which is the feature we extracted for this example. If you open the stockpiles branch you will see each of the stockpile features that have been extracted. From here you can open up the properties pane to view the calculated data about each stockpile (1D) or click on the individual stockpiles in the “Project Explorer” pane to open another nested branch to see the surfaces that were created for each feature (1E).

  2. For each feature that is extracted, two surfaces are created (the initial and final surfaces) and viewable in the newly created “Surfaces” node (2A) and nested under the “Feature Extraction” node (2B).

  3. When in the “Plan View” (not available in 3D view) the extracted feature boundaries can be moved to a more accurate fit, to update the volume calculations select the stockpile in the Volume Calculation table and press Calculate Volume(s)!

  4. Each surface and extracted feature can be selected in the “Project Explorer” pane which will automatically highlight the selected feature in the plan/3D view. This new system keeps all of your extracted features and surfaces organized in one tree within the “Project Explorer” pane instead of having to search for each one in the “View Filter Manager” pane.
