TBC Tip #221 - Road Corridors - Visualizing and Quality control

By Cole Schubert EXT posted 03-19-2024 13:00

Hello TBC’ers! This week's tip is a series of tricks on view settings, controls, and verifying attributes for corridor data. Using these tools should make working with corridor data a much more efficient process!

  1. With some corridor data, it can be hard to see what is going on in the different view types (plan view, cross section, profile view). With the “Layer Manager” tool open, change the line weight (1A) to any value above 0 to thicken the line work in each view type. This is especially useful for making the data easier to see when presenting it or on a video call. This is also where users can individually color the lines.
  2. If you select a surface in the cross section view, then open up the properties pane, a series of view options are available (2A). These will let you either show or hide data (slope, offset, names for nodes, etc.)  This can be used to clean up the view so there is less data visualized, which can make it easier to work with, or to display specific data points to make analysis easier.vs.
  3. One way to get more utility out of plan view is to change which way North is represented. While North is typically represented as up, this can be changed to make working with certain data sets easier. By holding “ctrl” and “shift” then click and dragging the middle mouse wheel in the direction you want to be north, the data set is now orientated with North in that direction (3A). This change in direction will be represented in the bottom left corner as a red bar (3B). To undo this, redraw the same vector in the opposite direction.
  4. The last trick is holding “ctrl” + “shift” rolling the mouse wheel to adjust vertical exaggeration. This works in any view with vertical data and makes identifying outliers or extreme vertical changes much easier.vs.
