Trimble Access surface inspections with SX instruments

Use the Surface inspection feature to compare an asbuilt scan to a reference surface, such as a horizontal, inclined, or vertical planes, cylinder, imported surface file or other scans.

The Surface inspection Cogo function calculates the distance to the reference surface for each point in the selected scan(s) and creates an inspection point cloud. Points in the inspection point cloud are color-coded to provide immediate visual feedback between the point cloud and the reference surface.

When inspecting a brick facade, for example, you will be able to see whether any sections of the facade are showing signs of movement off vertical.

Users can define the type of surface inspection, in the Surface inspection cogo form by choosing the desired method from the dropdown.

The available methods are:

  • Scan to Horizontal plane
  • Scan to vertical plane
  • Scan to inclined plane
  • Scan to cylinder
  • Scan to vertical Cylinder
  • Scan to surface
  • Scan to scan

Reference surfaces are either selected in the map or defined with points in the job. In the example below an inclined plane method is used to model the desired fall over a patio.

Three points are selected from the scan to create the reference plane.

Select any scan point to view information specific to that point. When connected to a conventional instrument that has a laser pointer, you can turn the instrument to the selected point to identify areas out of tolerance and assist with any remedial work.

You can also save screen captures and annotate them if required, to highlight particular point details and problem areas. These can be exported in a Surface inspection report which includes a summary of the surface inspection parameters, any screen captures of the surface inspection, and any inspection points stored with the surface inspection.

When connected to a conventional instrument that has video, you can see the surface inspection, you can also turn the instrument to the selected point to identify and stake out areas out of tolerance and assist with any remedial work.

Tap Store to save the inspection point cloud to the job.
