Application Options remain the same from the Google Play store. Both Hardware variants meet the strict Google Mobile Services (GMS) tests and guidelines.
If necessary both Android 8 and Android 10 products will be offered security patches or bug fixes for end-users to download and install.
More or less both products will function to the same/similar specifications - one TDC600 platform with two model types.
There should be no need for end-users to trade in or update physically their Version 1 units they equally meet the design specification of the components within.
The reason for the changes are specific to global supply shortages of components not due to failure or incorrect design.

What options are available to current TDC600 owners other than purchasing the new version 2?

James is quite correct the rules for OS upgrades are managed strictly by Google and Qualcomm and modeled towards the short-life spans of the Consumer telephone market.
Most "Rugged" products use the same chipsets as consumer handsets and follow the same rules. In this case, the TDC600 platform was able to replace the Obsolete CPU with one of the same series (Qualcomm MSM-8953-1-857-NSP-TR-01-0-AC replaced by Qualcomm MSM-8953-E-792NSP-TR-01-1-AB) to prolong its lifespan. This change provides Android 10 to be used. Unfortunately, the rules do not allow for the Version 1 TDC600 to upgrade past Android 8.0.

The older Qualcomm processor in the original TDC600 is not compliant with Android 10. Therefore it cannot be updated.
The TDC600 version 2, has an upgraded processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon 626), which is compliant with Android 10.

Old post....but the new "v2" of the TDC600 has Android 10. That being said, I don't know why Trimble didn't just have an OS update to V1 of the 600?

Why is Trimble always releasing old Android OS with their new data collectors??
Android 11 OS is available already for over 6 months and we are getting version 8.0.0 in the Trimble TDC600 and much older in TDC100/TDC150
