R1 Firmware Update

    I received the following error message when attempting to update firmware utilizing Trimble 99133 Series FW Upgrader_5.47.msi:

    trimble 1R firmware update failed to get device configuration

    Anyone with knowledge, please respond.

    Hi Geri

    I've done quite a lot of R1 updates to FW v5.47, have not seen the problem you describe. 

    Some questions which may help diagnose the problem:
    1. Have you tried using a different PC?
    2. Did you try upgrading the firmware more than once, but it failed every time?
    3. Have you reset your PC and tried again?
    4. What firmware is currently loaded on the R1?
    5. Did you start the upgrade with R1 powered off?
    6. Is the R1 battery charged (green power LED when you connect it to the PC via USB)?
    7. Do you have more than one R1 units, if so, do they all show the same problem?

    Hi Geri

    We have managed to reproduce the problem, but the only method we have found to do this involves (1) attach the R1 to your PC using a USB cable then (2) run the firmware updater, which should display the R1 in the list of available devices, then (3) turn on the R1 (could also do this before step 1 or 2), then (4) connect an application on your PC to the USB serial port, then (5) click "Next" in the updater to start the update process - the "failed to get device configuration" message appears.

    To avoid getting the message, we recommend that you close any applications which may connect to the USB serial port before you run the firmware updater, and you ensure that the R1 is turned off before attaching it to the USB cable.

    A thought to add but it could be unrelated.

    Have you tried to verify that the Windows 10 PC has proper drivers to connect properly to the R1?
