I'm trying to update my R1 to 5.47, but I get an error saying "Failed to obtain device configuration"


I've seen other users reporting this problem.

Hi Carlos,

If your unit is running a really old firmware, then I would try installing older firmware's first and stair stepping the unit upto 5.47.  For instance if your unit is running something previous to 5.09, then I would install 5.09, then 5.41, then try 5.47.

If that doesn't work, then I would reach out to the Trimble dealer you purchased if from and speak with their support team.

Yes, this exactly. I find v5.09 fixes a lot of issues including allowing the jump to later versions of firmware and making the R1 Bluetooth-discoverable automatically upon power up. I also have the GNSS Status app on my PC just in case I need to check the Firmware version of an R1 that has any updating issues connecting to the updater.

Hi Carlos

Can you provide some more information about this:

• Have you only tried to update one R1?  And if you've tried on more than one did they all fail?
• Have you tried a different PC?
• Was the R1 off or on when you started the firmware update?
• What Windows version is your PC?
• What firmware version is the R1 which you are trying to update?

We have managed to reproduce the problem, but the only method we have found to do this involves (1) attach the R1 to your PC using a USB cable then (2) run the firmware updater, which should display the R1 in the list of available devices, then (3) turn on the R1 (could also do this before step 1 or 2), then (4) connect an application on your PC to the USB serial port, then (5) click "Next" in the updater to start the update process - the "failed to get device configuration" message appears.

To avoid getting the message, we recommend that you close any applications which may connect to the USB serial port before you run the firmware updater, and you ensure that the R1 is turned off before attaching it to the USB cable.

If your computer is not recognizing the R1, try the attached driver.
