Phantom 4 RTK and Trimble

    Good day
I don't know if this is the correct community to ask but here goes.  So my mine bought the Phantom 4 RTK DJI drone for Geotechnical Wall mapping purposes but we have definitely used it for stockpile calculations and would like to start using it for more survey functions.  I also joined the webinar that was held in Dec 2020 as to how to connect the Phantom to trimble etc.  However, I have been having problems with accuracy and I don't know what I am doing wrong.  If I use the normal GIS flight mode or connect to trimble and use RTK I have the same accuracies, about 2m offset which is totally not within the drone's specs according to all the sites and even the trimble webinar held by Trimble.
ANybody on here using the Phantom 4 RTK?  I have tried to contact trimble directly with no luck and the supplier we use hasn't been very helpful either since they have not really used the phantom 4 RTK.

    Hi Karen

I am not seen the webinar you are referring to. Are you able to give some more information about what you mean by "connecting the Phantom to Trimble"? Are you trying to process the data using Trimble Software or are you using a Trimble receiver as a reference station?

There are tutorials available on how to process DJI Phantom 4 data in Trimble Business Center. Regarding setting up a reference station, if you go to the Trimble R12 page of the Trimble Geospatial website (link below), from the Documentation link you should find a PDF on Configuring a Trimble GNSS Receiver as an internet base for a DJI Phantom 4 RTK drone.

Here is the direct link to the PDF file I mentioned:
    https://trl.trimble.com/docushare/dsweb/Get/Document-948456/Trimble%20R12%20GNSS%20Receiver_%20Configuring%20the%20Receiver%20as%20an%20Internet%20Base%20for%20DJI%20Phantom%204%20RTK.pdf

Pay particular attention to the reference coordinate entered into the receiver to ensure they are correct. If you have a 15 m difference between in the z values it could be that you have entered the Othometric Height rather than an Ellipsoid Height. If you don't have access to good quality reference coordinates you might want to make use of the Trimble RTX post processing service. You can access it from here:

    Hi there

I finally had some time to properly look at the document you attached.  This is the document that I used for my setup, and the steps that I follow.  Just one question.  I think that one of the mistakes I make is that my reference point, the survey gps is not really setup correctly.  I just put it against something.  And the also when I press the here button it will give me the Survey rod coords.  Am I supposed to put in the drone position?  Which would make sense, but I don't.  However that still doesn't really explain why I have 2m offset always, except if I accidently always have the rod 2m away from where my drone's homepoint is, which isn't totally impossible.

Then I have no idea what the orthometric height vs ellipsoid height is.  I also experience the 15m difference when I fly in the GNSS mode, thus without any base station attached.

    Karen,

I have been involved with Trimble and the APM Module for many years. I see some good Trimble folks have commented but I thought I would share this YouTube channel that specifically covers TBC APM in regards to the Phantom 4 RTK. If you are in need of understanding ortho height versus HAE. Feel free to reach out to me directly and I can assist you with your questions. I can be reached at (720) 273-9182 or via email at mel@frontierprecision.com I hope these video tutorials help point you in the right direction. You should be able to achieve the the manufacture specifications on the DJI P4R using TBC APM. I have seen results that are as good if not better than Pix4D. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLuA5NxCrxRAPIWDr5kovqKYWOFwg8h2Ir
