Applying different permission to folders and subfolders

  • 1.  Applying different permission to folders and subfolders

    Posted 01-05-2023 08:12
    Dear Forum,

I have detected an inconsistency in folder settings, I'll explain with an example.

In the project, we have an exclusive folder to exchange information with a vendor, which is:

(main folder) SHARED WITH VENDOR: vendor has read only permission, so that he can't accidentally delete the folder.
(branch1)   SENT TO VENDOR: vendor has read only permission.
(branch2)   RECEIVED FROM VENDOR: vendor has full access.

Even though I click the "Apply only to this folder" option in SHARED WITH VENDOR (main folder), it overrides the settings in the branch folders. Moreover, it doesn't do it immediately, it does it after a couple of seconds so I find out then that the Vendor can't upload in his folder.

I temporarily solved it by giving the Vendor Full access to the main folder, but it's not what we really intend.

    Any thoughts on this?

    Thanks a lot and greetings!!

    HI Maria,
Can you please send the details of the project and folders to our Support team (connect-support@trimble.com) so that we can investigate.

    Dear support team,

Following the thread below, I'll list  the required information.

    Project licensing: Business Premium

    Server: North America

    Folder structure

1st level -- SHARED WITH VENDOR: default access: no access; Techint members: full access; Vendor members: read only access. Selected option: Apply to this folder only.

2nd level – SENT TO VENDOR: default access: no access; Techint members: full access; Vendor members: read only access. Selected option: Apply to this folder and subfolders.

2nd level – RECEIVED FROM VENDOR: default access: no access; Techint members: full access; Vendor members: full access. Selected option: Apply to this folder and subfolders.

After applying these settings Selected option: Apply to this folder only overrides Apply to this folder and subfolders. In consequence, Vendor ends up having read only access to RECEIVED FROM VENDOR.

Please let me know if you need further information and thanks in advance for the support!

    Dear Samantha,

Thank you for your quick reply. I am not able to show you the project where the issue is given the confidentiality of its content.

However, I replicated the folder structure in another project.

    1.       Main folder

There are two groups (in the real project there are many more).

    TEIC: Techint – my company.

Proveedor: Vendor (in this example my role is Vendor).

In this folder we can find two other folders:

Vendor has read only access to the main folder to prevent its accidental elimination, and has full access only to the folder where he's to upload content.

What happens is that Main folder's settings override subfolders' settings and consequently, Vendor has read only access in every folder.

When I go back to check main folder's settings, I find this:

I solved this by giving the Vendor full access to the main folder, but that's not really our intention.

Thank you again for your help.

    Dear Samantha,

I agree this shouldn't happen, that's why I thought it was an inconsistency. I failed to mention I'm the only administrator of the project.

Thanks for your help, maybe this was a one-time bug but I wanted to mention it in case it happens to other users.

    Have a great day!

    Dear Samantha,

Given that the issue only happened once in an specific project, I don't think it's necessary to go on with the investigation.

I thank you deeply for your time and concern. By switching permissions as I mentioned previously the issue is solved and no further problem is presented.

I will keep in touch in case anything changes and if I were to pick up this topic again, I'll provide a video.

Thank you very much, I'll happily rate your attention!

    Have a wonderful day!!
