Geo 7X need help

  • 1.  Geo 7X need help

    Posted 20 days ago

    First of all, hello everyone.
I'm writing here because, unfortunately, my local Trimble representative – in my subjective opinion – didn't care about my problem and didn't offer me any help.

I've acquired the Trimble Geo 7X GPS receiver mentioned in the title. I know it's not the newest device, but it should be perfectly adequate for my needs. I have an RTK surveying kit, consisting of the Geo 7X receiver itself and a Trimble Tempest antenna. Unfortunately, the person I bought the kit from hasn't used it in a long time, and therefore didn't renew their software licenses/subscriptions. Furthermore, the device was pre-installed with a German version of the system and software, which I don't understand at all. My first – and perhaps rash – move was to reinstall the system to English. It worked without any problems. I was "happy" for a moment, but unfortunately, it didn't last long, as I realized I had deleted all the information regarding the surveying software and the aforementioned subscriptions and licenses when I reinstalled the system.

And here I am asking for help. If I understood correctly from reviewing the information on the Trimble website, I need to purchase a TerraFlex software license to re-enable the device's accurate measurement mode, use dedicated measurement programs, and access the databases of reference points and corrections. I'm asking for help with purchasing and creating an account to operate the device and its upgrades, as my local Trimble representative claims it's an old device and doesn't support it in any way-meaning they're unable or unwilling to help me get it up and running.

I should add that the device works without any basic issues; it connects to the internet, and the laser rangefinder works. Unfortunately, I can't use the centimeter-level accuracy because it hasn't been "enabled," most likely through TerraFlex and the associated account, which I would have to create and pay for the software and device upgrade.

    I'd appreciate any help.

    Best regards, Artur

    Artur,

First, to be fair to your Dealer, the windows mobile operating system (or windows embedded handhel), Geo7x as a whole, and TerraSync software are long since discontinued. Second, when buying this type of equipment used, I would ensure to confirm working licensing/software PRIOR to pulling the trigger on purchasing. Third, TerraFlex is no longer supported on Windows mobile operating systems so that software is off the table. Your best bet is asking your Trimble dealer to request a TerraSync professional (or CM edition) code. If you provide the dealer with the serial number, Trimble may be able to cross check and find the license of TerraSync that was tied to it.

I'll try that – the question is, will I hear again: "We don't deal with recalled equipment"... It's actually quite sad. Someone once spent a significant amount of money on this type of equipment, hasn't had a problem with it for the last 10 years, and then suddenly something happens and they hear: "We don't deal with recalled equipment." Ultimately, I'll just throw the set in the trash and that's it – I bought it a few weeks ago for a price that doesn't a big deal to me, and I'm calculating the risk of losing it. On the other hand, today's world is crazy when it forces people to throw working equipment in the trash because someone refuses to restore it to working condition. The manufacturer's website has all the necessary software available for download, man want to pay to activate all the device's functions, and  hear – sorry, but no.

I'll try asking for the Terra Sync code and see what happens.

    Best regards,

Most Geo7x came with TerraSync but bear in mind there were also some cm versions with Access.

And for cm it would normally have a Zephyr 2, not the Tempest.

    Artur,

What is the serial number of the Geo? I can try to get you a TerraSync code for it. We have many folks still running these handheld receivers so it should be possible.

I'll paste a photo of the nameplate, all the data will be there and it will probably be the most readable:

The serial number comes up as "Trimble Geo 7X handheld (Floodlight, NMEA)" with no mention of H-Star or cm so indicates a base model with sub-meter. This would be consistent with the Tempest rather than the Zephyr antenna.

As an example, my cm unit shows up as "Trimble Geo 7X handheld with rangefinder (Centimeter, H-Star, Floodlight, NMEA)".

Okay. Now the question is: if I change the antenna to a "precision" one, like the Zephyr 2, will the receiver operate with centimeter accuracy? Does this require some change in the device's configuration, or is it completely impossible?

Nope, just changing antennas won't make any difference.

As John gmail says in an earlier reply, your device is "Trimble Geo 7X handheld (Floodlight, NMEA)", that means it is single-frequency so changing to a Zephyr will not make any difference, it will give sub-meter accuracy.  You'd need to find a Geo 7x with H-Star option or CM option to give dual-frequency and better accuracy, and those would have cost more originally.

If you find a Geo 7x which has the H-Star option turned on, that can give 10cm accuracy with Tornado or Zephyr 2 / 3 or internal antenna with appropriate corrections or using post-processing.

If you find a Geo 7x which has the CM option turned on, that can give 1cm accuracy with Zephyr 2 / 3 with appropriate corrections, better than 10cm with other antennas.

Upgrading an existing Geo 7x to add H-Star or CM option used to be possible but (1) you can't do it anymore because support for Geo 7x ended years ago, and (2) I'd guess even the H-Star option would have cost more than your second-hand Geo 7x cost you!

    A few technical points here:

    • The Tempest antenna is not suitable for RTK data collection with Geo7x - Tempest is L1-only, for best accuracy you need a good dual frequency external antenna, preferably Zephyr 2 or Zephyr3.
    • The base Geo 7x was GPS-only and L1-only, which would give sub-meter accuracy.  The "Floodlight" option added GLONASS, Galileo, Beidou tracking (but still L1-only) as well as an improved GNSS tracking mode.  The H-Star option gave dual-frequency L1/L2 tracking (dual frequency on GPS & GLONASS, but not on Galileo or Beidou since E5 and B3 were not supported) with 10cm accuracy.  The CM option  gave centimeter-level accuracy when using Zephyr2 antenna.  From memory, accuracy of Geo 7x with CM option using internal antenna was around 5cm and external Tornado gave about 3cm.  All these options were priced separately and could be bought with the Geo 7x or added afterwards.  These options are not lost when you reinstall the OS, so if your Geo 7x doesn't show the CM option, it never had it.
    • If your Geo 7x has H-Star, you can get 10cm accuracy using RTK correction if you can install GPS Controller, available on the Trimble website here.   But GPS Controller doesn't have any data collection features, it just lets you set up corrections etc.
