As far as I know, the Rotation Laser will physically auto level, when you balance the Unit within the limitation. For Total Station have duel axis sensors to measure how much the Unit off from Level positions and adjust them in Hz and Vz Angle values (digital).
It's mandatory to do Calibrate the Compensators frequently, at least 1 a month or any time you what best accuracy from your TS.

Subject: Trimble 5600 duel axis compensator
I'm starting to learn on my trimble 5600 total station. It has duel axis compensator. I have looked it up and also ask the 2 engineers I know. 1 is saying its compensation is for like if wind or rain or whatever moves it off plumb while your using it the other says its for setting up. So get you bubbl3 as close as possible and the compensator does the rest. Its says in manual that it corrects the plumb but I'm not sure if that's just after the bible to make it level like a rotation laser does or if its during surveying if wind blows
