Trimble Mobile Manager (Android) missing external devices

@Hannah Wirth and I are using Trimble Mobile Manager on Android.  Version 3.0.5 updated on January 15.  Devices are Samsung S21 Ultra and Samsung S22+.  All app permissions have been allowed.  We have cleared app data, uninstalled, and resinstalled with the same results.

TMM appears to only have one option in the form of Trimble Catalyst requiring a Trimble Login.  Selecting Position Source requires a Sign In.  Tapping 'Cancel' does nothing.  We have no option to select external receivers.  The Position Source tab only shows the current status of Catalyst.

This appears to be a major bug.  Anybody have a solution?  Hopefully Trimble can fall back to the previous version if this is actually a bug.

    Hi Neil,

This is not something that we have seen, and none of our testing has exposed anything like this. My suggestion would be to follow your usual support process through your Trimble dealer, providing a TMM log (go to the 'About' menu item, you will see the option to generate a log file from the About screen). Also confirm that on these two devices that Bluetooth is enabled and that the Trimble receiver is seen in the list of devices.

You are welcome to reach out to me directly also.

    Best regards,

    Neil,

If you would like to give me a call to clarify. I believe that you are correct about a BUG when using Android devices has recently appeared. I just tried to connect to a Trimble R12i like I used to through TMM and it will not ever appear. It shows scanning even though the device was already added in Bluetooth. I have a work around that seems to be working.

Here is a recent one that I have confirmed on several android devices. We recently sold several Trimble R12i's to different cities and water districts for both Trimble Access and Esri Field Maps.

Here is my old process that NO LONGER WORKS and work around.

Android Tablet Tap Bluetooth; add a device and find the Trimble R12i and connect.

Launch Trimble Mobile Manager and under position source list the Bluetooth devices and pick the Trimble R12i

GNSS configuration change from Auto to Custom Local and key in Direct or NTRIP settings

Connect and under status verify that everything is working and that your correction source is coming in and its latency.

Close TMM and know that everything is now setup properly for Esri Field Maps

Here is the only way that I have been able to get a Trimble R12i to work under current TMM and Firmware and Applications on Android

Android Tablet Bluetooth add a device and find the Trimble R12i

Launch Trimble Mobile Manager and under position source list the Bluetooth devices (It will never find the Trimble even though you just added it under Bluetooth. You can even go back into Bluetooth settings and confirm it is connected…so ignore this step)

GNSS configuration change from Auto to Custom Local and key in Direct or NTRIP settings

Connect and under status verify that everything is working (since you can't find the Trimble R12i, you can no longer verify this using TMM…skip this step)

Close TMM and know that everything is now setup properly for Esri Field Maps

    Launch Esri Field Maps

Make sure that Provider shows Trimble R12i or click add and you will see the Trimble R12i available and add it and check it to be current.

Verify you have built a proper Profile from GCS NAD 1983 2011 to WGS 1984 Web Mercator Auxiliary Sphere and chosen the WGS_1984 (ITRF08) to NAD_1983_2011

Launch your Map Card and watch the Trimble R12i work properly under GPS Details

Crazy but it works… Field Maps is just making a call to pull the GNSS configuration from TMM so as long as that was set correctly it works. Not ideal and NOT the way it used to work.

    Potentially a solution.

I followed Mel's steps and this caused Trimble Mobile Manager to freeze and crash if I attempted to open any of the tabs.  To fix, I uninstalled the app and deleted the TMM folder from the Android directory.  This requires a PC, but in my case it was This PC\Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G\Internal storage\Android\data\com.trimble.trimblemobilemanager

That folder was likely not cleaned out properly during the uninstall process.  @Hannah Wirth - had the same results.  That fixed the problem and TMM appears to be as functional as it was before for both of us.

    Thanks everybody for the help.

I ran a test today on a Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 3 tablet, running Android 13, latest TMM (never installed before on the tablet, so downloaded from Google Play) and connected directly to external source, a bluetoothe'd Trimble R1 (FW 5.48).   Had a clean connection, with no notification of TID required.

    Hi Neil,

Thanks for the update, I'm pleased you got things working! Are you able to let me know what OS the devices that had the issues are running please?

    Thanks again,

I'm happy it's working, too.  The devices we are using are operating Android 13.  @Mel Philbrook - had a different device and I'm not sure what Android version it is using.  Here are my brief connection steps for making an Android device work with a Trimble R12i.  These steps are working now and the same steps I've followed for about a year.
    • Before opening TMM, make sure the Android device is NOT connected to the R12i via Bluetooth.  If it is, remove/unpair the device
    • Open TMM>Position Source> and select List Connected Devices
    • Scan at least twice to find the R12i receiver.   Maybe three times.
      • If not finding the device after 3 scans, reboot the R12i and scan again.
