Trimble Reality Capture - Price model

    Hi Trimble Connect Users.

    In the release notes from Tekla Structures 2025 it is announced, that pointclouds can now be streamed from Trimble Connect, using Trimble Reality Capture.

    10GB Upload is free, after that the next quota is 1TB that costs 2'000 bucks per user, per year.

    Is anyone paying this ridiculous amount?

    You only need one license to cover all projects.

    I was told that the quota is defined by the model "owner."
    So, in a company with 10 Tekla Structures detailers, the employee who gets the 1TB quota assigned to their license will have to be the owner of every model that you want to use for point cloud streaming reality capture. The license is not assigned to the company but to a user.
    That way, you could get;

    • 1TB for User_A
    • 5TB for User_B
    • 0GB for User_C

    But if you are trying to save money, you will get 1TB for one user and make sure that user is the owner of the models. (When the user leaves the company, you will need to reassign the model owner to someone new...)

    Cumbersome and not very well manageable, if you ask me...

    Hi Mirko,

    I'm Nathan from Trimble's Product team, working on the Reality Capture Platform Service (TRCPS).

    To clarify, TRCPS includes a free 10GB tier for all current paid Trimble Connect users, which should be part of your Tekla subscription. If you need more storage, the next tier starts at 1TB and scales from there. You can purchase this through your local Trimble BuildingPoint or Geospatial distributor.

    Regarding pricing, TRCPS is not sold on a "per model owner" basis. Instead, it is linked to your organization's Trimble Account. When your company purchases additional storage, it is shared across all users within that account. Any user in your Trimble Account can access the purchased storage, and if a Connect project is created under this license, team members with the appropriate permissions can contribute data.

    For more details, you can check out our release webinar here.

    Let me know if you have any questions!

    Best,
    Nathan

    Hi Nathan,
    Thank you for the video, I appreciate it.

    Question: We got our Trimble Connect licenses via Tekla Structures.
    If I open Trimble Connect in the browser and check our licenses, there are only two user licenses, but no company license.

    So where would the 1TB quota be assigned if there is no company license? (It would be better if there was a company license.)

    Hey Mirko,

    Hopefully I can help clarify things and not make it more confusing.

    You can check the license storage in your Trimble Connect project after you enable the Reality Capture extension as shown below.  (You don't need to check the individual licenses like you were showing in your post.  The TRCPS license info is visible in the "Reality Capture" section of Trimble Connect.)

    Then the new "Reality Capture" section will appear on the left hand side menu.  If you open that section you can then click on the settings gear icon as shown below to see the storage usage for your organization.
    Once you click on settings you'll see something like what is shown below.  This is an example of an organization that hasn't purchased a TRCPS license yet.  Note that only a license is needed per Organization not per user.  The storage will accumulate based on the users in that organization adding data to this service. So each user doesn't need their own individual license and you don't have to do anything extra to authorize it per user.
    You'll notice that the "Structures test inc." Organization is showing as the Project Owner for this Trimble Connect project.  Since that organization doesn't have a TRCPS license I see that I have 10GBs that collectively my company can use within every project that shows "Structures test inc." as the Project Owner.  You can check what Organization is listed as the owner of the project by checking the "Project Details" section as shown below.
    Here's where it gets a little confusing.  Since you have your Trimble Connect licenses via Tekla Structures, when you purchase a TRCPS license that also needs to include a Trimble Connect license that is licensed through Trimble's EMS and not managed through ATC like your normal Tekla licenses.  Unfortunately the Tekla licenses administered through ATC don't support the TRCPS licenses so that's why a Trimble Connect license managed through Trimble's EMS needs to be included with the purchase of the TRCPS service.  This is something we are working to resolve but this is the current state of things.  Once you have that Trimble Connect license that the TRCPS license is associated with you can change the "Project Ownership" to that license to see your new storage amounts as shown below.  In the example below I changed the "Project Ownership" to "Trimble Solutions Corporation"

    Now when I check the storage available for my organization I can see that any project created or modified to use that Organization can use up to 2TB.  You should be able to purchase in increments of 1 TB so you don't only have the option to go from 1TB to 5TB.
    Hopefully that helps clear things up but if not feel free to post here or email me directly at lee.snyder@trimble.com.

    Is there a way to tell in which projects the storage is used?

    @Tero Laine No not at the moment but that is one of the top requests in the backlog.

    Hey Lee

    Thank you for clarifying things. I forwarded this to Buildingpoint Switzerland.
    From a user's perspective, I would suggest a 100GB step for adding more storage, rather than the 1TB step you mentioned.

    So, if 1000GB = $2000, then → 1GB = $2 → 100GB = $200
    This way, a significant amount of money can be saved over the years, rather than paying for 1TB when only 100GB is needed or paying for 2TB when only 1.1TB is required.
    With the current quota options, this feature would cost us 10'000$ over 5 years... (and we most likely will not be using up the full 1TB storage space per year)

    With 1TB quota:         5 Year x 2000 $ = 10'000$       --> 10 years = 20'000$
    With 100GB quota       5 years x 200 $ = 1'000$          --> 10 years = 2'000$

    The price is high, but applying the above 100GB quota option would make it more affordable.
    I think it's great that one can go "big time" on storage space, but for companies like ours, a more moderate option is necessary.
    Does my perspective make sense to you?

    Hey Mirko,

    Yeah that definitely makes sense to me.  I've passed your feedback along to the responsible team for their consideration.  I'm not aware of any immediate plans for adjustments in the near future but I can update you as I learn more.
