Trimble R2, ESRI Collector, iOS and MSL

We are using a Trimble R2 with ESRI Collector for iOS and would like to have orthometric heights without all the post processing.  Do you know if ESRI is planning to make this possible with the Collector for iOS?  Or would we be better off using Trimble Mobile Manager and the Collector for Android?

Hi @Melanie May. I think your best route is to look towards Field Maps on iOS which supports the same orthometric height workflow with TMM across both Android and iOS. Collector will only officially be supported through the end of 2021 as Esri has committed to Field Maps as the replacement product. The field data collection workflow in Field Maps is largely the same as it is in Collector.

Matt thank you for the info.  I was unaware that ESRI had a new app.  Using Field Maps for data collection is the direction we will be taking.

    Matt,
I might be reading between the lines, but does your statement indicate that Collector (newer version) will not store orthometric heights, but ArcGIS Field Maps will? I understand that the HAE value is stored in the altitude field and I've seen that it is also being stored in the geometry's Z value as well. It would be better if Collector were storing NAVD 1988 elevations.

I have followed your four part series of blog posts (first part linked below) and am currently looking for any place where I may have deviated. Just want to be sure I'm not wasting my time if Collector won't store orthometric heights.

We have seen Trimble Mobile Manager display NAVD 1988 elevations but have yet to see anything other than an HAE value written to a feature class.

    Thank you for any help.

Hi @Paul Lohr. On iOS, only Field Maps has access to an orthometric height through the setting in TMM. On Android, both Field Maps and Collector (but not Classic) have access to the orthometric height. In Esri's implementation of altitude/height and metadata, the orthometric height is only stored to the Z value(s) of the feature geometry, but only the ellipsoidal height is available as a separate metadata attribute (ESRIGNSS_ALTITUDE). I believe it's on their roadmap to also provide the orthometric height as a separate metadata attribute. This does imply that you need a Z-enabled (3D) feature service in order to be able to get the orthometric height value stored to the geometry.
