Does anyone know of any known issues with running TBC on a CPU with an AMD Ryzen 9 processor? I install TBC on a new CPU this afternoon and received a runtime error on initial startup of TBC. will post a screenshot
see the following post #kmp_affinity warning
Unfortunately AMD Ryzen processors aren't supported by TBC. This is because TBC uses Intel multi-thread processing, which is not supported by the Ryzen processor. For more details please refer to the TBC release notes.
well, unfortunately, mention of this was not in the release notes. The release notes do not say "incompatible with AMD processors"...
From the TBC 5.20 Release Notes under System Requirements:
Processor:Dual-core 1.80 GHz or better recommendedQuad-core 2.80 GHz or better (additional cores with hyper-threading support highly recommended for Aerial Photogrammetry, Mobile Mapping, and Scanning modules)Note: Because components of TBC make use of Intel-only multi-thread processing, AMD Ryzen processors are not supported.
"OR BETTER". the AMD 3.46 GHz Ryzen with 64GB RAM is far better than the minimum requirements. No mention of incompatibility.
When my Intel based laptop was out of service, I was forced to use my custom-built home PC running a Ryzen 7 3700X. The same error popped up when I started Business Center. I just minimized and ignored the error message and was able to use TBC as I normally would. The occasional error while working would pop up more often on the Ryzen CPU than the Intel, but a simple save and restart of TBC allowed me to keep working. While TBC doesn't like Ryzen, you can do it in a pinch from my experience. I'm interested to here if any other users have similar experiences. I will definitely be trying the fix listed under #kmp_affinity warning .
The document you posted is the Technical Notes, not the Release Notes. The Tech Notes were published in 2018 so could be up to 2 years old. I have contacted the TBC Product Manager and told him that this document needs updating. You are welcome to try disabling the KMP Affinity setting but I cannot guarantee it will work.
If you have the option of returning the PC, that might be the best course of action.
James, Thanks for following up with Trimble. You can update your records to know that the AMD Ryzen processors to work with TBC as long as you apply the fix mentioned above. Happy surveying!
