Migrating Trimble Positions Desktop add-in databases to a different computer

08-25-2022 16:59

Trimble Positions Desktop add-in stores data like projects and sessions in a relational database. The Trimble Positions Configuration utility is used to select or configure the database to be used (default types are Jet/MDB and SQLite if a suitable driver is installed). After installing the add-in the first time, the user is required to run the Configuration utility to create a database configuration, or, to accept a default database configuration when running the add-in for the first time. The connection information is stored as an encrypted string in the active system.config file (per-user or per-machine).

When switching to a new computer, users may be able to transfer file-based Trimble Positions databases (in particular the Jet/MDB and SQLite types). The process of transferring a Trimble Positions database is as following:

  1. Use the Configuration utility to find the location of the currently used database on the source computer.
  2. Copy the database file to the new computer (typically in a similar path).
  3. Use the Configuration utility on the new computer to create a new configuration by selecting the copied database file.
  4. Test the connection to confirm that the transfer is successful.

Please note that local ArcMap files like map documents (mxd files) and file geodatabases also need to be copied to the new computer.

The main obstacle in transferring Trimble Positions databases to different computers is that geodatabase names and full paths are stored as part of the Trimble Positions project definitions. If projects are created from file geodatabases then their full file/folder names are stored with the project in the database. To be able to use a transferred Trimble Positions database, referenced file geodatabases, when copied to a new computer, must have the same full file/folder names as in a source computer. If that is not possible, please contact your Trimble distributor or Trimble support who can provide further help.
