Announcing Path Navigation

Path navigation mode in Trimble Connect 3D Viewer allows you to move along linear features such as a road alignment or a centerline. This mode provides a view that follows the path, giving a continuous perspective along the selected linear object.

Step-by-Step Guide to Using Path Navigation

  1. Load a model that contains a linear feature, such as a centerline or alignment.

  2. Activate Path Navigation mode. From the camera controls in the top toolbar, change the default "Rotate" mode to "Path navigation". A help panel with command information will appear. You can close this for better visibility.

  3. Select a linear feature.

    • To do this, hold down the Control key and use the left mouse button.

    • An icon that looks like a small box will appear. Use this icon to click on and select the desired linear feature in your model.

    • The camera will then "snap" to that path.

  4. Navigate along the path.
    • Once snapped, use the mouse wheel to scroll forward or backward along the selected path. This moves you along the centerline.

Path Navigation Commands

  1. Adjust your view.
    • Change your viewing angle: Simply left click and drag the mouse to change the camera's angle while moving along the path. The movement will continue with the new view angle.
    • Adjust vertical position: To move your focus point up or down in the Z-direction, hold the right mouse button and drag.

    • Zoom in and out: Hold the Control key and use the mouse wheel to zoom. This changes the magnification of your view.

    • Unlock vertical movement: Click the "Unlock Z plane" icon (lock symbol) to freely move the camera's focus point in any direction while dragging with the right mouse button. Clicking it again will lock the Z plane, restricting vertical movement.
  2. Jump to a new position or path.

    • Hold the Control key and click the left mouse button on a new location on the current path or on a new linear feature to instantly jump to that spot

  3. Reset or exit the navigation mode.

    • Reset to default view: Click the "Snap to path" icon (crosshairs symbol) to reset your view angle and elevation to the default position on the path.

    • Exit path navigation: To completely exit the current navigation session and choose a new starting point, click the camera icon. You'll need to re-select a linear feature to begin a new path navigation.
