Trimble Catalyst Engine Update - QZSS Support RTXIO beam enhancement and performance improvements

12-07-2018 04:09

Trimble is pleased to announce the v1.2.2243 update to the Catalyst Service.

Included in this latest Catalyst release are the following enhancements:

  • QZSS L1/L2 support
  • Maximum satellite count increase
  • RTX broadcast coverage updates
  • Improved Trimble Everest™ multipath mitigation
  • General bugs and stability improvements

This update will not affect the current minimum specifications required to run Catalyst and Catalyst remains compatible with all existing compatible devices.

QZSS support

The Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS) is a four-satellite GNSS and satellite-based augmentation system for the Asia-Oceania regions, with a focus on Japan. The primary purpose of QZSS is to increase the availability of GNSS in Japan's numerous urban canyons, where only satellites at very high elevation can be seen. A secondary function is performance enhancement, increasing the accuracy and reliability of GNSS derived solutions. As well as providing improved performance in Japan, the additional use of QZSS L1/L2C satellites in the Catalyst receiver will assist positioning performance for Catalyst users in the wider Oceania region, including customers in Indonesia, The Philippines, Australia, and New Zealand.

Maximum Satellite Count Increase

As a software-defined receiver, Catalyst’s GNSS engine can be updated over time to make best use of the additional computing power available to it on newer and more capable phones and receivers with faster processors and more memory. In Catalyst Service v1.2, Trimble has increased the maximum number of satellites that can be tracked by the service, to maximize and optimize performance. The service monitors the Android device’s capabilities to determine how many channels to allow to ensure optimal performance.

RTX broadcast coverage improvements

Catalyst now supports the latest Trimble RTX L-band beams, including the RTXIO beam broadcasting over central Asia, and the RTXNA beam broadcasting over North America. The benefit for Catalyst users is an increased availability of RTX through the Trimble Corrections Hub when working with Catalyst while offline.

The latest coverage areas are illustrated below.

Improved Everest Multipath Reduction

A dominant error source on satellite measurements is caused by multipath, where signal reflection causes distortion of measurements by the GNSS receiver. The implementation of Everest™ multipath rejection technology in use in Catalyst has been expanded in this release to include GPS L2C measurements for improved performance of multipath reduction on the receiver.

General Bugs and Improvements

A number of minor issues have been resolved in this release, including stability enhancements that eliminate known causes of crashes.

Android device minimum specifications

The minimum requirements to run Trimble Catalyst remain unchanged after this update. Trimble Catalyst requires at a minimum:

  • Android 5.0 or higher
  • 64-bit CPU with at least 4x ARM®️ cores
  • 1.5 GHz per core or faster
  • 1.5 GB RAM or higher

Availability

The update is available today, and is free to all Catalyst users. The update is delivered by installing the latest version of the Trimble Catalyst Service from the Google Play Store.
