Upload & Viewing Revit Files

It is now possible to add Revit (.RVT) model files to the project and view them in 3D using the Connect for Windows application. Note that this feature is not intended to replace the Connect for Revit add-on which gives the most control over choosing which views get uploaded and other upload settings. Rather, this feature offers a quick, but less controlled, way of getting Revit models into Connect without having to install the Connect for Revit add-on.

We’d love to hear from you!

The Revit model viewing is released as a BETA feature. There may be some models that are not rendered correctly or some property data may be incomplete. If you encounter issues, we’d love to hear your feedback.

Step 1: Upload Your File

  1. Download the latest version of Trimble Connect for Windows from the Trimble Connect App Store and install on your computer

Note: if you already have Trimble Connect for Windows on your machine, verify you are using the latest version. Update if necessary. Version 1.9 or later required.
  2. Sign in to Trimble Connect
  3. Open your project

  4. Click Add file

Alternatively: drag & drop a .RVT file from Windows Explorer
  5. Using the file explorer, navigate to a Revit (.RVT) file and select it
  6. Click the View button
  7. Once the file has been processed it will appear in the 3D viewer. Note that the processing result depends on the naming conventions that were used during the creation of the RVT file in the authoring application (see Important Notes)
  8. Upload the file to cloud

Step 2: View the File on the Web

  1. Go to the Explorer page.
  2. Select a file by selecting clicking anywhere in the row
Note: clicking the file name will open the file in the Viewer application automatically.
  3. To view the file, click the View in 3D viewer button or the model thumbnail in the Details panel on the right-side.
  4. The 3D application will open in a new tab
  5. Once the file conversion is complete, your model is ready to view

Note: If the conversion is complete but you are not seeing your model, it may be because of the zoom level. In the Overflow Menu - select the option Fit to View

Important Notes

A Revit file can have multiple views in it. Trimble Connect for Windows uses the following rules to determine which view gets selected for rendering. The rules are evaluated in numerical order:

  1. If a 3D View called 'Publish' is found - it will be selected
  2. If the current 'Starting View' is 3D view - it will be selected
  3. If there is a 3D view matching for name {3D} - it will be selected
  4. First 3D view found is selected
  5. The 'Starting View' is selected (not 3D - the same that is shown when the model is loaded to the Revit application).
