TBC Tip #243: Download Features from a GIS Data Source

By Anna Zapel posted 04-10-2025 12:35

Hello TBCers! If you’re not using the GIS Module in TBC, you’ve got to check it out! We’ve talked about how to work with GIS data sources, set up a GIS connection, download schemas as FXL files, create and edit feature definitions, upload features to a GIS source, but today we’re jumping into how to read (or download) features from a GIS data source.

To begin this workflow, open your TBC project and set up a GIS connection:

  1. Select Read Features from GIS in the GIS ribbon under Connection

  1. In the Connection drop-down list, select the data source connection you want to use. Use the Select drop-down list to limit the features you wish to input:

    • Read all - Select this option to read features from the entire area covered by the data source.

    • Window - Select this option to limit the search to only those features that are entirely or partially located within a user-defined rectangular border. To define the rectangular border, either enter coordinates in the Corner one and Corner two fields, or click in the fields and select the coordinates in the Plan View.

    • Polygon - Select this option to limit the search to only those features that are entirely or partially located within a user-defined polygonal border.

  2. To exclude the features of any feature type from the download, uncheck the feature type check box in the Features list.

  1. Optionally, you can create feature attribute queries using the filter icon button, allowing you to import only those features whose attributes match one or more specified values (for example, download only Pavement features whose Material attribute is equal to Concrete). Specify an attribute query for any feature listed in the Features list by clicking the Filter button and creating your query in the Custom Query dialog.

  1. When you are ready to download features, click OK.

  2. If a coordinate system mismatch is detected, the GIS Coordinate System Mapping dialog displays, allowing you to specify whether to (1) change the project coordinate system to match the GIS coordinate system cannot not transform grid coordinates, (2) keep both coordinate systems and transform the grid coordinates, and (3) consider the project and GIS coordinate systems to be the same and not transform coordinates. Click OK after making your selection.

  1. Features included in the selected feature types are downloaded into your project and the new feature points are displayed beneath the Points node in the Project Explorer. In addition, the selected data connection is displayed beneath the Imported Files node as an imported data source.

  1. Click Yes to generate an Import GIS Data to Entities Report.

You’re all set! Maximize your TBC experience and ensure smooth workflows by utilizing learning & support material most aligned with your needs and personal preferences.
