Request Connect’s 3d domain users and integrators to move to web domain before 31-Dec-2023

By Darshan Rajaram Kamat posted 08-24-2023 07:18

We request Connect’s 3d domain users (https://3d.connect.trimble.com) to start using the web domain (https://web.connect.trimble.com) before 31 Dec 2023. This includes any of the following -

  • bookmarks to the legacy domain for opening 3D files, views ,

  • any legacy URL links shared through individual emails or chat , or

  • use of legacy 3d domain in any embedded applications.

After the end of 2023,  the legacy 3d domain will be retired and all requests will fail

Background

As it stands today, Connect for Browser, Mobile and Windows apps do not have the same features. One of the most common feedback we have received from customers and users regarding our client applications is the need for feature parity.

In order to meet this requirement, the Connect team is working on an initiative called the Progressive Web Application (PWA). This will be a single client application that will address use cases of Connect for Browser, Mobile and Windows apps as mentioned below.

PWA will help with the following -

  • Address feature disparities among Connect clients (Browser , Mobile , Windows apps) -  It takes effort and time to have the necessary features available across all clients. With PWA all the user groups will have benefits of all features.

NOTE : Connect PWA is installable and can be accessed on both Mobile and Desktop devices apart from being available as a regular web application. At this point, it cannot replace the Connect Mobile and Desktop native applications. We are still working on bringing the needed feature parity and occasionally connected workflows or offline behavior.

  • Avoid the need to install applications separately from different app stores.

  • Ease of issue fixes , improvements and code maintenance - Issue fixes and improvements will be in one application and they will cater to user scenarios across devices. This will also improve Connect Team’s efficiency with faster deliveries.

Connect’s 3d domain retirement

We had requested Connect’s 3D viewer users to move from 3d domain (https://3d.connect.trimble.com) to web domain (https://web.connect.trimble.com)  in Sep 2022  during our UX /UI changes for PWA (Reference : Release Notes) . We had requested to change to the web domain before the end of 2023 Q1

We also requested our client API integrators in Nov 2022 (Reference - Community post) - to move to trimble-connect-workspace-api before end of 2023 Q1 for the following -

  1. Connect Web 3D Viewer API (Workspace API)  ,

  2. Connect’s Project Workspace API (Project Extensions

Considering the number of requests to 3d domain towards the end of 2023 Q1 , we redirected traffic from 3d domain to web domain.  It still continues.  Trimble Connect’s 3D viewer  has been in the web domain for a considerable time (since Sep 2022) . We plan to retire Connect’s 3d domain  by the end of 2023.  This will stop any redirection from 3d domain to web domain.

Who will be impacted?

If you are -

  1. Connect’s Web 3D Viewer UI user (through bookmarks, links in emails or chats, QR codes, custom application integration, etc.) or

  2.  An integrator for embedded Connect 3D Viewer

and are still using the legacy 3d domain , please move to the web domain before 31-Dec-2023

The requests to the 3d domain will fail after this deadline as the old 3d domain will be fully retired.
