Introducing Property Set Master Libraries

Sept 30, 2020
Trimble Connect for Browser | Trimble Connect 3D Viewer

What’s New

Overview

Today we launched a new feature to the Trimble Connect Workflow Extensions: property set master libraries. The master libraries feature enables Account Admins to create template property set libraries and apply them to multiple projects.

A master library is similar to a normal property set library. The main difference is that it’s created by the Account Admin in the account context. After the Account Admin applies the master library template to a project, then the Project Admins can edit the library contents and set access control permissions in the project context. In this article, you will find descriptions of the property set master libraries features.

Accessing Property Set Master Libraries

The property set master libraries are accessible by Account Admins from the Account Administration dashboard of the Connect for Browser application:

Creating a New Property Set Master Library

Create a new property set master library by clicking the “New master library” button in the top of the page. To create property sets and properties to the library, follow the instructions under the Property Set Libraries section in the Trimble Connect Workflow Extensions - User Guide.

Applying a Property Set Master Library to Projects

Apply the property set master library template to projects by selecting the Add to projects option from the context menu:

Then, select the projects to which you want to apply the template from the list. The list displays projects that are associated to the account:

After clicking the Apply button, a specific version of the master library template is created and placed to the selected projects. Now, the project level library is a new version with it’s own change history which makes it possible to introduce project specific changes: edits done in the project level are not reflected back to the master library template.

Editing a Property Set Master Library

To edit a property set master library, click the Edit master library button next to the library name. Instructions for making changes to Property Sets and Properties in the library are in the Library Management section in the Trimble Connect Workflow Extensions - User Guide. Changes made to the master library template are not automatically reflected to the projects that the template has been already applied to - this is because a new specific version of the master library is created when it is applied to a project to enable project specific changes.

Editing a Property Set Library in the Project Context

Once the property set master library has been applied to a project, it becomes accessible for Project Admins in the project context where they can edit the library content and set access control permissions. Please refer to the Access Control section in the Trimble Connect Workflow Extensions - User Guide for instructions on how to set access permissions for the property sets in the library.

For convenience, also the Account Admin can edit property set libraries in the project context by selecting the Edit library or Manage permissions option from the project libraries context menu:

Business Premium license is required for editing property set libraries in the project context.

All edits that are made in the project context are local to the project and they are not reflected back to the property set master library in the account context.

Deleting a Property Set Master Library

Delete a Property Set Master Library by selecting the Delete library option from the context menu:

Deleting the master library does not delete the libraries in the project context because a new specific version of the master library is created at the moment when it is applied to a project.

Duplicating a Property Set Master Library

Selecting the Duplicate library option from the context menu creates a copy of the master library. The copy can then be used as the basis for a new library.

Ownership and Access Control of Master Libraries in the Project Context

After the property set master library has been applied to a project, it becomes visible to all project admins in the project. However, edit access to the library is given only to project admins who belong to the same account with the master library template. Project admins who belong to other accounts will see a message that informs them of the view-only access:

In other words, the ownership of the master library template stays with the account where it was created even after being applied to a project that has users from multiple accounts collaborating in it.

Property set libraries that are created locally in the project without using a master library template, continue to be editable by all project admins in the project.

Known Limitations

  • Changing project ownership to another account does not currently transfer ownership of the master libraries - they can be edited in the project context only by the project admins who are members of the original owning account
  • In the initial release, there is not a merge feature available that would enable merging changes from the master library template to the libraries in the project context after the template has been applied for the first time.
