TBC Tip #244: Map GIS Metadata

By Anna Zapel posted 05-05-2025 13:53

Hello TBCers! If you haven’t explored the GIS Module in Trimble Business Center (TBC), now is the time! We've covered various aspects of how to work with GIS data sources, set up a GIS connection, download schemas as FXL files, create and edit feature definitions, upload features to a GIS source, and how to read (or download) features from a GIS data source. This week, let's delve into mapping metadata, a specialized area of the GIS workflow.

First of all, it's good to know that there are some restrictions for the “Map Metadata” command:

  • The GIS connection needs to be set up

  • Mapping is only available for observation points from RTK or total station measurements

  • Only points can be mapped

  • Feature definitions must exist in both TBC and the database with identical naming

  • Points must be assigned to a feature

So let’s jump into the workflow. First, open a TBC project that meets these criteria:

  1. Set up a GIS connection. Review Tip #146: Manage GIS Connections for a step-by-step workflow.

  2. If you get the coordinate system warning click OK and choose the "Consider the project and GIS coordinate systems to be the same" option. Click OK.

  3. Select “Map Metadata” in the GIS ribbon under Connection.

  1. In the “Select GIS data connection” drop-down list, select the connection to the data source to which you want to upload metadata.

    • Each feature type in the selected data source is displayed in the “Available fields” list. Expand any feature type node to view associated fields and their data types.

  2. In the “Select project object type” drop-down list, select the project object whose metadata you want to upload.

  3. In the “Available fields” or “Available properties” list, select the property you want to map to GIS. Fields with the same data type are highlighted in the list opposite of the property you selected.

    • If desired, check the “Map all GIS fields with same name” checkbox to automatically select all fields with matching names.

  1. Click the “Add Mapping” button. The selected mappings are displayed in the Mapped fields list and are no longer shown in the “Available fields” list.

  2. Repeat this procedure for each property/field mapping you want to define. To remove a mapping and return its field to the GIS Available fields list, click the Delete icon next to the mapped pair.

  3. When finished, click Close. Use the Write Features to GIS command to map the data with this metadata.

You’re all set! Maximize your TBC experience and ensure smooth workflows by utilizing learning & support material most aligned with your needs and personal preferences.

@Anna Zapel Thank you for the response. Would love to see this functionality integrated with the GIS module in the future

@Neil Wagner currently it's only possible to map raw data from total station and GNSS measurements with the map metadata tool. However, to get your local and/or global coordinates into your GIS you can use the Export tool workflow in TBC, for example selecting the shapefile export option and selecting "Yes" on the local and/or global coordinates in the Settings.

Hi Anna,

Is it possible to map the local and/or global coordinate values from TBC to a field in my GIS? I don't see those as options in the map metadata tool.
