When using GLO notes is there a way to use the geodetic bearings for my calculations?

Hi James,

TBC allows you to work with geodetic bearings or azimuths in a number of commands.  The best example is the Inverse Command, available in the Quick Access toolbar up top:

Use the TBC snaps to pick your desired points and the results are given in grid, ground, and ellipsoidal distances as well as grid azimuths (or bearings) and ellipsoidal azimuths (or bearings):

TBC defaults to North Azimuth, but to change to Bearings, jump into Project Settings > Units > Azimuth, and change 'Display' to Bearing:

Thanks for responding Joe, I use the inverse command all the time and I've got my template switched to display bearings. I didn't phrase my question very well. Can I draw a polyline or a linestring using geodetic bearings / azimuths instead of grid? That way if I know where one section corner is I can start from it's coordinate and then build out the sections using the geodetic bearings.

Just want to make sure I got your question correct. Are you trying to draw a line with a start point and a bearing/azimuth? Or does the bearing/azimuth have to be geodetic? 

In TBC we usually use grid bearing/azimuth. In certain cases, the ground bearing is also available when you have a local site configured. However, the geodetic bearing is almost only available in the Inverse command. 

If you'd like to draw a line with a start point and a bearing, instead of clicking, do a right-click, then you would see more COGO options in the context menu.

Similarly in the CAD Command Line, you could choose a different mode by using the apostrophe followed by the command code, or click on the cross-hair icon as below.

Again, by default, the bearing/azimuth here would be in grid.

The bearing azimuth needs to be geodetic for following GLO/BLM. Currently in Civil 3D I'm creating points using the _AeccCreatePtGeodeticDir command and then drawing my lines.

Sorry it took me a while to get the answer verified by the engineers. 

The geodetic bearing is mainly used in TBC's proportioning workflow. When you choose Single Proportioning or Double Proportioning from the Survey tab, you can choose to use geodetic or planar/grid as the calculation type. 

Besides that, we don't support using geodetic bearing in other common CAD commands. They are all grid. 

A workaround would be to manually calculating the grid bearing from the known geodetic bearing, if you also know the Meridian Convergence Angle.

Thank you for the answer. Having the ability to do geodetic bearings (and not just plain bearings) would be a great thing to have in TBC, especially because it is already there in many areas (i.e. inverse and COGO routine). Calculating out plain bearings can put you off of a location by 50 feet, and when you are digging to search that is a lot.
