Is there ability to make the “New Layer” dialogue have an additional option to place the layer in a category similar to the drop down for group selection as not to do this in a separate step later.

    Travis,

On V.5 in the Layer Manager command, you should be able to assign the new layers to a group as you create it.

Karen - it seems the point of the question was missed. He is asking to have a column added to the layer manager for Takeoff Categorization similar to the functionality of the Group Layer dropdowns.

@Alan Sharp - I also believe adding a column to the layer manager for Takeoff Categories would be very helpful.

The New Layer command is being phased out and replaced by Layer Manager - that allows you to put data into Layer groups directly - you can also create New Layer Groups from there if you need to.

If you are asking about classification of layers for takeoff - I agree that we should integrate that function in some way with Layers and Layer Groups (Layer Groups to a large extent are similar to the Takeoff Layer classification - however they don't support the workflows associated with Site Improvement areas that you find in the Layer classification process

So maybe I partially answered the question here - but if you were asking more about Takeoff that is good input Richard

Let me know and I will forward notes to the development team accordingly

This is now the intended workflow. The New Layer Dialog has really been superceded by the Layer Manager that is what gets popped up whenever you select "New Layer" from anywhere. While the New Layer command is still available, we did not see people continuing to use it now that the Layer Manager has been created and is actually a better solution all round to Layer Management.

Do think this is a possibility to get added to Layer Manager?  See response on thread below.

"Correct, Layer Manager has increased the ability do multiple selections during creation of the layer.  My question is more for take-off purposes as placing items by layer in "Categorize" such as Design, Original, Utilities, etc..  Creating a drop down for "Categorize" as the "Group Layer" drop down has been created."

Main challenge with this though is that the Takeoff function allows you to do more than just categorize the Layer - it also allows you to set the Site improvement associations etc and i don't feel that that is a Layer Manager function

Understand the request though and will consider when we rework that area of the software

Because the Categorize Layers command also has the ability to a) associate a Layer with a Site Improvement and b) flag that a layer "contains potential boundary lines as well as the ability to Categorize / recategorize layers to the Takeoff Categories there is more functionality than we would really want to burden the Layer manager with at this time.

I recommend creating all of your layers and layer groups in a prototype / project template and also categorize them in the project template so that you are only creating the odd new layer as needed to supplement your standard layers - this will make you faster and managing your project template over time so that "all the layers you ever need" already exist in the template as categorized layers with all appropriate settings.

While I do see that Layer Groups and Layer Categories would be used in a very similar way, they do have differences.

When we come round to a point where we rework this part of the software I am sure we will consider some consolidation here also

Correct, Layer Manager has increased the ability do multiple selections during creation of the layer.  My question is more for take-off purposes as placing items by layer in "Categorize" such as Design, Original, Utilities, etc..  Creating a drop down for "Categorize" as the "Group Layer" drop down has been created.
