How to create offset points for curb staking from 3D line work?

  • 1.  How to create offset points for curb staking from 3D line work?

    Posted 09-29-2019 21:32

    Hello,

I'm wanting to create offset points from elevated linework for curb staking and structure placement.  Currently I stake out linework in the field and hope for the best, but I'd like to arrive with my offsets already created as offset points at necessary intervals and breaks in the curb.

My employer is transitioning from hiring out the modeling for layout work to going internal with me, however we still have premade models with elevated linework in the field for the next few projects, and I'd like to be able to get some work done on them.

    Cheers!

For doing Offset Lines you will need to use the Offset Line command first to create the lines at the offsets that you want from your Curb Lines, Then once you have the offset lines, you can use the Create from CAD command to create points at the ends of segments etc. You can use Create at Intervals command to create points at say 10' intervals (but these will be at 10' intervals along the offset line not the source line which may not be what you want? If you need the points at 10' intervals or whatever along the source lines, you can create them on the source line, but you will then need to create points manually along the offset lines at the same locations as the points on the source lines.

You could also try using the Create Sideslope command to create the offset lines as that will work off the source linestring and will create you the end points and interval along the source line in the offset line so this would likely be better. Once the Sideslope has been created then use the Create Points from CAD command and use End Points to create at all the Interval and End Point locations.

For Radius Points you will need to do those manually today, for Arcs contained in a linestring, the create from CAD command does not currently create the Radius Points automatically - I have a request in to fix that but it is not in 5.1.2 version.

For Structures - the same approaches above will work.

Let me know if this helps or if you need more direction

Alan, Thanks!  This is very helpful. A few follow up questions: how do I measure an arc already contained in a linestring/polyline? Do I have to separate it from the line?

Is is there a command to place elevated points where on 3D line touches another? For example when an ADA ramp edge ends at a top back of curb?

Is there a set of tutorials I can read/watch related to prepping data for foundation layout or curb layout?

    Cheers!

You can use Explore Object command on an Arc included in a Linestring and if you click on the arc segment it will give you property data as shown below about the Arc (Length and Radius) if those are the measurements you are asking for?

For Elevating Lines - use the command Elevate Lines in Data prep Menu - in there you will find an option called Intersecting Lines (assumes that the two lines Touch or Cross but you can also put in a search radius (but careful with this setting not to make it too large (use it for where two lines are very close e.g. 0.01' but not when they are 2' apart for example as that can create more connections than you may want. The Elevate Lines command will ask for the Lines that you want to Elevate and the lines that are intersecting (from which the elevation will be derived.

My colleague Mike Carris runs what we call Trimble Library and there you can find a lot of Video Tutorials on all aspects of the product. To get into Trimble Library you will need a Trimble ID. You can access Trimble Library from the Support Menu in TBC (the icon that says Retrieve (this is the name of the system we use for the Trimble Library). There are videos out there for free and some are available from the Library Store for a small fee. All the videos are indexed so you can search for words in the Videos and it will find those spots in the video for you. There are also many videos on the forum (here) that if you know what you are looking for, type it in in Search and you may find what you are looking for here also.

The difference between Trimble Library and the Forum is as follows. The Library has Training Videos on Subjects like Data Prep, Takeoff, Corridors etc. and do a great job of teaching those subjects overall. The forum however responds to specific questions or problems that people have (in general) so the responses are out there with many videos that show how, but you may have to dig around to find what you are looking for. So the combination of the two is god for getting an understanding of the processes and how TBC works (Library) and asking specific questions as you dig in and use the product (Forum).

If you search for Data Prep for example, all the posts that have been tagged with Data prep will be reported

I have started creating some Blogs on the Forum, and in those I have tried to start capturing all related information in one Blog Feed - however these are still not ideal for "Basic Training" purposes - the Library is better for that.

If you have any issues with Trimble Library - please contact Mike Carris directly (michael_carris@trimble.com) and he will take care of your library needs.

    Thanks

The only thing that I would say about the Library - is that it may not cover exactly what you are asking ref prepping data for Curb Layout, and it is hard for me to point you at exactly the correct video for that - Mike would be able to advise you and may prepare a Video Title on that subject specifically as a result of you asking him if none exist today.

Look at the PUG 2.0 Blog Feed on the Forum. There are some good Training Videos on using Sideslope command for Curb and Gutter and Foundation Modeling for Buildings as that was a subject at the last PUG class.

Nathan, do you need to create points? We connect the curb linestrings to get the longest string possible, convert the linestring to an alignment, go to export alignment as .rxl, name them in an easy to use structure, load them in Access as an active alignment and stake on any offset you need. You will be able advanced through all VPI's and PI's stations and you can set a default station increment.

Your offset is real time on the screen. Keep the cad 2d curb line active for grabing radius points as needed.

Write the station and design elevation on the stake and you will have a reference if the field has a question.

You don"t need to buy Roading for this workflow either!

    Points are so 2010 .

See my Post requesting for an easier alignment to RXL work flow for more info.

    Good luck!

I would recommend you to go with RXL alignment like Tom has said. For the last two years I use only alignments for setting out and CAD lines for arcs and there was no problem
