LINESTRINGS DISAPPEAR WHEN GRADE TOLERANCE CHANGE

  • 1.  LINESTRINGS DISAPPEAR WHEN GRADE TOLERANCE CHANGE

    Posted 05-15-2020 13:46

I am having problems with my line strings getting erased and or disappear when I change the grade tolerance in my project settings.  I have created a cut fill map and I wanted to change the tolerance but when it recomputes the surfaces my line strings are erased.  Is this a bug?

    Thanks,

When you say Grade Tolerance what do you mean - the breakline approximation parameters?

Are you sure you don't have a selection set applied to your view filters or something like that that is hiding the lines or that you turned off cad visibility in the advanced view filters setting

If you select by layer and choose a layer that has the disappearing linework on it and then look at selection explorer and see what is selected pre the change and then make the change and repeat - select by layer will pick hidden and unbidden data and will tell you if the data is being deleted or just being hidden for some reason

I would be surprised if we delete the lines and I have not seen that personally but you never know - I would need the file and the steps you take to recreate the problem

In the project setting under computations and surface you can change the grade tolerance. I think it is defaulted to around .6’. I was wanting to set it to .1’.  After I created the cut fill map most of my site was shaded white because the cut and fills were less than 2’.  So in order to show my guys better where the cut and fill was I tried to change those tolerances. When I did TBC started to recompile all the triangle and it did in fact change the shading but all the line strings I used to create the surface disappeared. I tried zooming out to see if they went to zero but that was not the case. I didn’t use any selection set or view filters. I worked with everything in the my filter do to the small size of job.

I will try to check things again and see if by chance there was a selection set applied. I will let you know the out come. If it still happens I will let you know and send you the file.

    Thanks

Ok - I will take a look later to see if I see anything in this that could

    be happening

Are you referring to the Tolerance setting in the Surface Creation Defaults? that then becomes a property of each surface? If yes then this Tolerance relates to the "Adjust Flat Triangles" setting just above it - if that is set to Yes then this tolerance is used, if set to No then the tolerance is not used. The idea of this is to drive Triangles up and down a slope where the three edges of triangles are relatively flat or perfectly flat - typical use cases are the breaklines around the base of a stockpile on a flat stockyard surface, the shape of the toe of slope can often result in triangles forming between 3 points on the Toe line, rather than forcing the Triangles up and down the slope of the pile - this creates "Flat Spots" around the toe of the pile - and can result in "lost surface and associated volumes. The same applies when you have a Ridge line or berm going down a slope and you are modeling from contours - often the TIN will form between points on the same contour until the next contour gets close enough to force the triangulation up and down the slope - this setting again stops that and forces the triangles to use longer sides and go up and down the slope without the need to add manual breaklines to force it.

or are you referring to the Above Grade and Below Grade tolerances for the CF Map - if that is the case then those would change the White Band of the Cut Fill Map - in your case they would narrow the band of the 0 on grade and increase the amount of Red / Blue but I am not sure how it could delete the linework - I would need the data or a video to see what you are seeing to try and diagnose the issue.
