PICKING ALONG A LINESTRING AT A CERTAIN ELEVATION

  • 1.  PICKING ALONG A LINESTRING AT A CERTAIN ELEVATION

I was wondering if there was a way to pick along a 3D linestring at a set elevation on that line to say start a new line?

It would be helpful in certain case where you need to tie into or start from a line string at say a whole elevation.

    Thanks,

    Ben

I have thought about this before as well. It might be difficult with 3D lines though because there are multiple places this could occur. Not impossible though.

VPI@Elevation Macro will give you what you are looking for. A vpi will be created at the station and elevation on the line that you desire and then you can create another linestring. After this, in the coordinate box, right click and snap to the end point where the vpi was created.

Nick is correct - I would do this that way also

Spin off Idea - the ability to create smart text along a line at certain elevations. Useful for creating call outs.

Can you give me a work example - are you saying like label at every 0.25' elevation or something along a linestring like a flow line or a TBC or CL or Ditch Line etc. ?

Correct. Flow lines, utilities alignments, face of building.

    Maybe 3 types of entry:

    Layout

    • select line
    • Select portion if desired, similar to the offset line
    • options to label
      • at interval
        • .25 ft, 5ft
        • At interval would allow users to quickly delineate spot grades on flatter sites for plan sets.
      • at elevation
        • Useful for roads and ditches but also useful for utilities for finding areas that meet clearance factors
        • At elevation could be used for design work to find spots where a linestring holds a particular elevation to had contours too.
      • at high or low points
        • This would place a spot grade at the lowest or highest point along a linestring
        • There is no automated way of doing this in tbc currently. Is there?
    • Text style
    • Text
      • allow users to do math
        • add.5ft for back of curb
        • Pipe clearance, pipe thickness
    • Leader: yes/no

Here is an example I came across today

End Snap will snap to VPIs also

The only issue with this is my vertical snaps don't always show up.

The snap indicators are not enabled on VPIs but they do work if your pick box is over the VPI it will pick the VPI location on the line.
