Dwg import problems.

We have problems importing dwg because of blocks and external references and so on. It seems to have been a bigger problem the last 6 months, maybe autocad has done some updates? Some dwg:s are just getting a wite screen an we are only able to mark things in the lower left corner. Cant zoom or pan. The problem is that the people that has created the file is not aware of the problem and we, as consults for an contractor we rarely can speak to them. And the contractor doesent know what i am talking about. Of course the best thing is to tell the creator to send the correct format but that will take A LOT OF time. Is there any way to work around this? Anybody know a free software to use and then export?  Or any other workflow that may work.

Try DWG Trueview viewer - it allows you to convert a file between different Autocad versions. If you convert to an older format it's more likely to import into TBC with fewer errors.
