Export Boring Log

Is there a way to export/import a boring log? I am trying to get the boring log from an old drawing to a new drawing without having to recreate the boring log.

I just tried exporting it as VCL and was able to bring it into a blank project.

I just tried using VCL and it will bring in all the data except the strata. Did you get the strata to transfer?

Yeah, It brought in depths and material in the MSI manager as well. I'm doing it off a corridor strata though. Are you doing a site one?

I am using site strata. I used the 'VCL Project Link exporter' under Construction and selected all for data and it didn't bring the strata with.

Are you selecting just the boreholes to export?

I have tried just the layer with boreholes and also selecting everything.

No materials or strata copy over.

Can you upload your project and I'll look at it when I get a minute?

Like all dependent objects when you select one part that has dependencies, the VCL exporter should pick up all of the dependent objects - so for example if you pick the Strata Surfaces they are dependent on the Strata Definition which is dependent on the Existing Terrain and are dependent on the Boreholes as well as the Materials that you used between the strata layers - so I would expect if you pick the Strata Layers that all the other parts would also go. If you pick the Boreholes only - they only depend on the Materials and maybe the Existing Terrain so the strata likely would not go as a result of selecting the Boreholes.

I suggest you always pick the lowest order object in the hierarchy and that should take care of what needs to be packaged up. I have not tried it yet - but that is the behavior that I would expect to see here.

If all else fails pick the Strata Surfaces, Existing Terrain, Boreholes and that should take the lot required.

I tried selecting the strata surfaces, original ground, and boreholes. This got me only what I selected, 'points' for the boreholes and the surfaces. It didn't bring in the strata definition or any boring log stratum information for the boreholes.

I took a look at this today - and the dependencies here are all pretty complex and I guess this export is just not going to give you what you want - I will explain in a minute. I suggest that you save your project as a new project and then delete the things that you don't need and start from there - I cannot get the Boreholes to transfer with all of their content. Having aid that I do note that the Strata Layers come across as Strata Surfaces, and they will recompute if you switch between Depth and elevation computation method etc. so they are evidently carrying some of the extended data with them to facilitate that - however they are are going to be detached from your Takeoff and I don't think you will be able to reassociate them unless you use the Save As a new project approach.

The dependencies here are complex and I guess we have not plumbed all of those into the VCL exporter - see below

The Strata Surfaces themselves are dependent on

    1. The Boreholes
    2. The Original Ground Surface defined
    3. The Define Strata List
    4. The Materials defined in the MSI Manager

The Define Strata List is dependent on

    1.   The Surfaces Method
    2. The Original Ground defined in the strata list
    3. The Materials defined in the MSI Manager

The Original Ground is dependent on

    1. The Takeoff Layers categorization
    2. The objects on the layers categorized as Original Ground plus any other objects added to the Original Ground surface using Add / remove surface members

So in order to take the Strata Layers to a new project via VCL we would basically need to reconstruct the Takeoff setup, The MSI Library, all of the Original Ground Source Data, The Original Ground Surface, all f the Boreholes and their content, all of the strata surfaces etc. and that evidently is not happening here - I have logged this in as an issue to look at. The Boreholes themselves have dependencies on the strata lists and the MSI Manager so it is not as simple as just selecting them and exporting them because of the dependencies that are built in.

Hope that this explains the situation and an approach that you can take that will work

Thanks for looking into this, I appreciate the support.

I am also looking to be able to bring across my strata surfaces. A quick workaround I see an easy possibility for would be to import the bore logs as a CSV import. I do this for water table because it tends to cross multiple strata layers.

However, this would only work if the bore log creation too allowed you to import the data instead of manually having to plug every single point.

Is is possible to import bore hole data from an excel or CSV? This would allow you to export and import into the bore log creation module. All you would have to do is first define strata, then the depths/elevations of the different layers would become assigned automatically based on the column in the csv/excel file they are associated with.

This is not possible today unfortunately - I agree that any of these tools would benefit from Import / export of CSV data - I have tried to get development to provide that in the past
