Using One Drive

What files do I need to put on OneDrive to be able to be synced across my desktop and my laptop?   Just having the project directory isn't enough.  I want to have all the TBC user settings, Machine Control Data, Trimble Synchronizer Data to match the desktop and the laptop so it doesn't matter which computer I'm working on everything is synced.   A workflow to accomplish this would be great.  I got into a calibration problem when I used desktop computer to sync the rover.  Before OneDrive I designed model on desktop and then moved everything to laptop for edits and field data import and simply stayed on laptop until project completion.

    Thanks.

This is a big question and there is no quick / simple answer here

    1) Project Settings are all stored in your Project Templates - you will need to have those (look in Support / Options / Project Management and Support / Options / File Locations - those will tell you where your Templates and Custom parts are stored on your PC including

    • Project Folders
    • Project Templates
    • Block Definitions
    • Custom Export Format Definitions
    • Office Synchronizer Location
    • Project Library for Earthworks System

    2) Your Options file can be saved out from Support / Options and stored locally on your PC - you will need to do that each time you update Options and have that location sync across to One Drive

    3) Custom Setups like Drafting Templates - Sheet Layout / Drafting Templates (you can find the path to that from here)

    4) If you have Custom Feature Code Libraries, Material and Site Improvement Libraries etc. you will need to know where you store those and sync them. They can be anywhere on your PC (I have one Custom Setups Folder on my Documents folder where I keep all these things

    5) Custom Menus and Toolbars - if you export these - again these can be anywhere on your PC you will need to sync those

    6) If you save out Layer / Layer Groups then again those can be anywhere on your PC

    7) If you save custom Road Templates or Sideslope Templates then again these can also be anywhere on your PC

    8) If you use some of the drafting functions, things like Label Styles and Table Styles etc can all be written out to anywhere on your PC

    9) Your Menu Layouts etc are stored separately and are unique to each installation and are created when you load a custom menu etc. so no need to track those down.

Be aware that running Sync on things like your Project Folders while in use has been reported to create issues with some types of data e.g. Images, Point Clouds, Photogrammetry data - if the files get Syncd while in use - so be careful using this to share all your Projects and have them continually synching in background.

I think that this covers the majority of the things that you need to think about at least.

I had my computer crash a few years ago and ever since then I have stored everything in DropBox. I also like this because then I can look up information on my phone when in the field.

The only issue I have seen is when printing a plan set. For whatever reason, TBC does not like to print to the the DropBox location. I want to say this use to work before TBC 4.0 but I do not recall exactly.

Besides this, everything else seems to work pretty well for me.

So you dont have any issues with pointclouds together with dropbox? We had big problems but now we know how to work around them, and huge troubles with scans from our SX10. Today we started up office365 so we are switching to onedrive and this is not fun. As soon as i have moved a project folder to the new location on my computer and i open it it says that the pointcloud is corrupt and we i cant import it again. If i just move the folder somewere local in the computer it works. If i delete the database files in the project and the folder then i can import the pointcloud again but all surfaces made of the pointcloud is gone. I hope i will solve this...

    Merry Christmas!

The reason it wasn't saving is because of the apostrophe in my last name. This command didn't like the file path with the apostrophe in it.  I change L'heureux to lheureux and everything works correctly now. Finally!

My sync setup is not quite as advanced, but I use a paid program called sugar sync to keep things in sync between devices. this includes my data collectors that are running a version of windows.

I ended up selecting this program for the simple fact I could select any folder on my computer, regardless of where it is, and have it sync.

The main folders i keep synced are the project folder, Trimble Synchronizer Data, and the trimble data folder (for access)

so far the only issue i have come across is big BC project files, I might need to pause the sync before I save the file. But this is not a issue that happens often.

And it is the same benefit as what Patrick said, being able to access project information from my phone or another computer in the field, has been a blessing, and has saved my behind a few times.
