When did you download the TBC v5.3 Install Package?
If not yesterday, please download again as it may have been corrupted, and in the first week of release they made a change to the installation package as that had an issue.
When installing TBC v5.3, did you first deinstall the old version to remove it from your PC? If not do that. If you want to keep it as an alternative, you can browse the Program Folders for the TBC installation and Cut and Paste it to another location on your PC before de-installing the instance that remains.
If you are having issues doing the installation, I would also run the cleanup utility to wipe the old instance from your PC. Backup up all your Menus, Templates, Libraries etc before doing this. The Cleanup Utility can be downloaded from the following link

Download and install the Cleanup Tool and then run it and use the Quick Clean option.
Now try installing the TBC v5.3 version. You can simple double click the Installation Package and it will unpack it and then place the installation package in C:\Trimble Downloaded Installations. Once unpacked it should just start to install, if not you can run Setup.exe from here also.

If this works please let me know.
If it fails, you should also do a Windows Update, Graphics Driver Update and System Update from your PC Manufacturer. If you have all updates and a clean setup it should work.
