Adding labels on reference lines on profile sheet

  • 1.  Adding labels on reference lines on profile sheet

    How can I add labels (elevation, slope, etc.) on the "reference lines" (which represents my extra VALs on the same HAL) in the profile sheet set? These are the only options I have for reference lines.

    I tried using the Segment Labels but can't get it to show up. Not sure if i'm missing something.

    The Segment Labels can be used to place a Slope on each segment of the Reference Line - Slope Length and Length will not label a Reference Line because the Line is likely not parallel to the centerline.

    If you want to Label Elevation, Delta Elevation eg the Difference between eg an underground utility and the Design Surface you can use Interval Labels and set them to "Node" method (that way they will be attached to the reference line in the Profiles that you create.

    In the example below the Slopes were created using Segment Labels, the Elevations and Delta Elevations using the Interval Labels at e.g. 1" or 0.5" intervals along the reference line.

    Here are some screen shots of how the labels were set up

    Segment Labels

    For Surface select the Reference Line - in my case it is U-TV (all reference lines are treated as a profile through a surface model), for the Label I selected the Tag Slope of the Surface U-TV. Text Style is hatever you need and the Minimum Length is the minimum length of segments that you want to label (i.e. if the segment is shorter than you define then it wont be labelled). Layer and Color are evident I guess.

    Interval Labels

    Ensure that you pick up the correct Surface / Reference Line and set the Text Origin to be Node if you want the profile itself to be labelled.

    Labeling the Elevations

    Labeling the Delta Elevations

    Make sure that t the Interval Label level and the Segment Label Level in the Tree that all the things you want drawn are checked as Draw. Then at each Label Level you have them also checked as Draw and on Layers that are currently Visible.

    Hope that this helps

    Let me know if you need more direction on this - if you are still struggling after this, please share your file and I will try to get it working for you.

    Hi Alan,

    In the TBC Profile sheet settings, you can specify the horizontal scale and the vertical exag factor. Is there an "automated" way to annotated these values onto the sheet, other than just adding them as manual text?

    Regards, Richard.

    Sure - where there's a Will there's a Way ....

    Here is a video on how to do this - bear in mind on a drawing Sheet you may have multiple Dynaviews for Plans, Profiles, Sections etc. so there may not just be "One Scale" and "One Exaggeration" etc for the drawing sheet. The process uses the Smart Text function using SC as the Object Based Code for Scale, VE for Exaggeration and VS for Vertical Scale. All these Smart Text items are tied to a Dynaview Object. The Text should be placed within the Plan or Profile View and within the Dynaview Frames that you are using to create the Dynaviews. Also the Text needs to be placed on a Layer that is visible within the View Filter applied to the Dynaview. The Dynaview that is created from the frame will then have the Text drawn within it

    Here is an example Smart Text Setup for this purpose

    Scale = @<OD,O,SC>@
    Exagg = @<OD,O,VE>@
    VScale = @<OD,O,VS>@

    These text items will Dynamically update if you edit the properties of Scale or Exaggeration of the Dynaview

    I typically keep all my smart text setups in a Notepad File that I leave on e.g. my Desktop so I can create these quickly when I need them.

    Hope this helps

    Hi Alan,

    Is there any way of having the Smart text item with the dynaview scale housed in the title block I.e. not within the actual dynaview? I understand that an object oriented smart text needs to be tied to an object however our company standard is to have the plan view scale displayed in the title block.

    Thanks

    The text can be placed anywhere including in the Title Block. The challenge

    is that you may have several Dynaviews on a sheet and they can all be at

    different scales - the smart text retrieves its Scale values from the

    Dynaview to which it is referenced. Also because the Dynaview does not pre

    exist in a Drawing Sheet, you cannot set up that reference so that it is

    automatically filled in - you have to change the reference to the Dynaview

    on each sheet that you create - for that reason I typically do not use the

    Smart Text Item for Scale - I manually update it from a default value (eg

    1' : 50') rather than auto extract it as the editing of the text takes the

    same amount of time as re referencing the smart text to the correct

    Dynaview - and in many cases my default scale will be correct and I dont

    have to change anything. Using the Smart Text does eliminate any possible

    mistaken scales of course and from a QA standpoint that may desirable.
