TTM Error in SCS900

I consistently receive errors in SCS900 when utilizing a TTM surface containing multiple areas. The error message is attached. The TTM, also attached, is not a large file (392 KB). The GCS900 systems have no problems with these disjointed surfaces. My workaround is to create a new surfaces with the disconnected surface as the primary surface member. When the surface is created, all areas are connected with a large "web" or tinning, which is by no means ideal. I've seen this issue on new and old controllers alike.

Any ideas as to why SCS900 cannot handle this?

The TTM File has a number of Error Flags on it  - not sure how you generated this file - TBC opens it and shows all the flags, but the data must have come from somewhere - it looks like there were a lot of crossing breaklines in the original source and that could be the problem

What type of data surface is this for?

I will get the SCS900 team to take a look at why it flags it during opening

I have asked for SCS900 team to let me know whether it is the Flags, the islands or something else that is causing the error on opening - if it is the flags they could be addressed in TBC - we just added an Explode Surface TML that converts a TIN into 3D Breaklines that can be edited which may be the solution if the islands are acceptable - I believe that we used to support Islands OK but things have changed since I was responsible for SCS900 development so need to check (and it has been a while ...)

I have encountered this error before as well. The last one I can remember was when the ttm surface had breaklines creating a vertical face. I found the breaklines in question (using TBC flags) and offset the top line 0.10' and exported a new ttm and it loaded fine. Also noted that the surface would load in GCS900 and Earthworks but not SCS900 unless fixed.

The SCS900 team responded today and will give me more detail tomorrow

    1) The TTM file will read into the next version of Siteworks (v1.1)

    2) They have never supported Islands in a TTM File - TBC does this by "Hiding the Link triangles" between the islands in all views i.e. Slicer, Corridor, Plan, Profile etc. but they are still there and can be seen if you change the surface color to RGB Value 100, 101, 102. It doesn't sound as though they intend to support Islands anytime soon - however they will comment tomorrow further.

    3) I will find out tomorrow as to why the file will not open in current version of SCS900

    Hope that this helps

I have encountered this issue a few times.  It has always been with TTMs that have come from Civil3D and as far as I have been able to tell it has been related to the boundaries.  The way I have resolved it is to explode the surface and recreate the boundaries.  I usually recreate the boundaries in Carlson Civil using their shrinkwrap command because it is faster.  Once I have the linework for boundaries and triangles I recreate the surface in TBC and apply the boundaries to create the islands.  I did a test run on a portion of your data and it loaded into the emulators for SCS and Siteworks.

    Curtis,

That is an interesting work around. I’ll have to try that on my end. Could you send me the new surface you’ve created for my reference?

According to the SCS900 Development team the problem with this file is that there are some isolated triangles with no adjacent triangles - i.e. One triangle hanging in space. The team also states that they do not currently support islands in a TTM and they will triangulate the entire area together. The development lead was going to raise the issue with Product Management to see if they want it implemented.

If you triangulate the data using TBC and eliminate the islands (import the triangle faces data only not the TIN and then let TBC model the entire surface and then export it as a new TTM that will likely work best.
