Modeling Tip - Use Side Slopes to clean up linework

Cleaning up contours to elevate edge of pavement from can be a pain and tedious.

Here is a trick I found. I think it speeds up contour cleanup along edges of pavement, especially for site style projects.

    Steps:

    1. Elevate edge of pavement
      • Could be as simple as putting it at elevation 1. This is just so that the create side slope function will work
    2. Use create side slope
      • Create two lines far enough on either side of the edge of pavement to trim the bad contour data
    3. Join the side slope lines to create a closed polyline
    4. Join the contours to be trimmed
    5. Use the clip command
      • Make sure to use the "Remove lines inside bounding lines" method
      • Select the lines to line and the bounding line
    6. Turn off edit layers
    7. Use the trim/extend command and extend the trim turns to the the edge of pavement
    8. Elevate edge of pavement using the elevate lines commands

    Process in action:

I think it works pretty well. They one thing that would make this easier is a polyline select function.

If anyone has any other tricks, feel free to share.

    @Pat L'Heureux

Here is another way you can do this to.

I wonder why the gap tolerance is the combined length of different gaps? I would have never thought that. Doesn't seem very intuitive, am I missing something? Thanks

This sounds like a TML need -

    1. Pick all Curb Lines (Clipping Baseline)
    2. Pick all Contour Lines (Lines to Clip Out)
    3. Define Offset Left
    4. Define Offset Right
    5. Go

Allow this to be done one Clipping Baseline at a time or many clipping Baselines in one pass - challenge with this is if not all curbs are defined in the same direction, Offset Left and right (if not equal) are direction dependent - so doing one line at a time - allow the line to be reversed or the offsets to be reversed (show the line direction so you can tell somehow) so that doing one at a time would be quick and would give you a preview.

Pretty easy one to do I would think - will send this over to Peter at Rockpile to look at ....

    Peter ???

Thanks for the suggestion. I will look into it next week!

Peter did create a TML for this type of work and it works great!
