Select by linestring

A select by linestring function would be very valuable for takeoff and data prep. This would allow the user to create a temporary linestring and select anything that this linestring crosses.

    Thank you!

Good Idea Pat - we will see what we can do

Any traction with this? I keep finding cases where this could be very valuable; data prep, takeoff and modeling.

We have not got to this yet Pat - we are in process of improving the Admin platform for TML status and the MyRockpile community forum which will be launched shortly so TML Dev is kind of quiet for a couple more weeks and then I hope I can get Peter on the case

We hope to have a package of stuff for PUG in April

We had that function in Terramodel, I used it a lot and I still miss it.

I told that to the Belgian and Netherlands Trimble distributor, they told me that they are working on it.... but that's allready many years ago. Would be nice if we could use this command in TBC now to select points along a given line. For exemple, when you have a number of points connected by a linestring that should be relayerd or change height ...

You can do that currently. Use the select by Polygon command. Make sure the select by is set to crossing boundary. This is kind of deceiving but works like you are asking for. i use this for as-builts all of the time.

There should almost be a separate command though for this.

If you are talking about the Terramodel "OfLine" option, then there is something in TBC that is almost the same.

You have likely seen the "Select Members" context menu item when you have a surface selected. This runs the "SelectMembers" command (which is hidden). This command finds objects that the selected object is dependent on. (In this case, the members of the surface)

This command works with any object so if your linestring is selected and you key in the command "SelectMembers", the objects the linestring are dependent on (the points) are selected. If you use the Station/Offset coordinate option in the linestring editor, then this will also include the lines used to compute the station/offset coordinate.

Since SelectMembers is a hidden command (as it was expected to be used only from a context menu), you have to key in the command name.

Thanks Gary,  I have also been looking for this method to select points since Terramodel.  It may be a stupid question but how do you key in the command name and is it possible to have this command so I could put it on my ribbon?

    Thanks

    Fred

The enclosed video shows how this works - basically

    1. Select the object
    2. Press F12 to call up the command pane
    3. Type "SelectMembers"
    4. The objects that are dependent on the object that you first selected are now selected

I will clarify one thing that Gary said and that is that when you draw a linestring if you use the "coordinate" input method and snap to a series of points then the linestring while it is drawn to the point locations is not dependent on the points -ie if a point is moved then the linestring will not follow the point that moved. However if you use the Point ID method to draw the linestring then the point ID is what the linestring is using for its location and now it is dependent on the points to which you connected it - if the points move then the line does too. Now SelectMembers only works in the latter case not the former.

When you import SCS900 Work Order Data and create linework from the measured points, or if you import point data and use Process Feature Codes or use the Create Linestring from Points command the following is true

    1) SCS900 / Siteworks Measured Data (auto processed on import) - Linework is dependent on the points

    2) Point Data Connected using Process Feature Codes - Linework is dependent on the points

    3) Point Data connected using Linestring From Points - You have the choice to use Point IDs or Coordinates in this process - if you select Point IDs then the linework is dependent on the points.

    The video shows you how
