3D Graphics Issue - Zoom and Rotation

  • 1.  3D Graphics Issue - Zoom and Rotation

My 3D view has not been working properly when zoomed in.

I have run project cleanup to make sure everything is at a reasonable elevation

I have toggle line marking turned off and show all lines at solid

I'm only at 47% memory and less than 20% CPU so its not the computer

My mouse moves freely and its not slow it just skips around when I zoom in in 3D view. Also, I can only zoom in to a certain level and all the lines and points disappear

When I rotate, it will move off the screen.

Is there a fix for this? Its making 3D almost useless

What version of TBC are you running?

List the specs for your computer.

If you have a processor with 4 cores then 20% is flat out on one core.

Update your graphics driver and make sure you are using the graphics card and not the graphics on the CPU.

Close all but one 3D graphic view.  Each view consumes memory.

hold down the alt key and click on an object in the 3d view to set the rotation point.

Refer to the following document for tips on speeding up TBC.

If still problems then archive your project and send it to me.

I'm running whatever the newest one is.

My computer specs aren't worth mentioning. They're awful. 16 gb ram but no standalone graphics card. That is definitely a contributing factor to my issues but that's a bit out of my control since no one will agree to get me a nicer laptop...

I only run one 3D view.

I have tried running nothing but business center and it doesnt help.

Didn't know about the ALT key. Ill have to try that.

I was thinking maybe an external graphics card might be a cheaper option than a new laptop?

should I only run one monitor?

Can I reference my OG layer so that TBC references it instead of being part of the project file?

You may find issues if the project extents are huge either in vertical or in horizontal eg if you have something at 0,0 and then the rest of the data is miles away you will get the issues you are seeing. For example I import CAD cross sections and they are all at 0,0 area and my alignment is at 100,000, 100,000 then the project extents get huge and I see the issue you are seeing - the fix is to move the 0,0 data closer to the project area thereby reducing the project extents- you may need to save the project close it and reopen it to reset the extents. Normally when I do that it helps. I also see this if I have an alignment at elev 0 or undefined and the project surfaces at 6500 feet as is common in colorado - same thing here - create a dummy val at roughly the project z and the problem goes away

Let me know if this helps

I have run project cleanup multiple times but I hit scan for elevation range and it told me minimum elev about -550000 and max about 500000. How can I find out what items are this low so I can delete them?

I would look in the plans and see the elevation range of your project, and then set the minimum and maximum in project cleanup to just outside that range.  Project cleanup will set those objects to undefined, and then they should not cause you problems anymore.

I did all that multiple times. What I ended up doing was going through the entire project by hand and deleting/removing anything that wasnt vital. I guess I eventually removed enough to make it work again. It started to show again when I added a new large surface but I think Ive about figured out the limits. One thing that would help is to be able to cut pieces off my over-sized OG surface. it was an XML so Im not sure how to delete parts of it.

If it was an XML TIN Model you can use the Explode Surface Command to convert it into Lines and then make a new surface out of the lines. Then you can delete or remove parts of the surface as you need to (add Remove Surface Members or Delete the Lines completely). You can also but a Boundary (2D Line) around the area that you want to keep and then add it as a Surface Boundary to limit the surface model.
