SPS855 Base Station Error - Need Help

  • 1.  SPS855 Base Station Error - Need Help

    Posted 08-26-2019 10:44

I am repeatedly receiving this message when trying to setup my SPS855 base station through my TSC3 data collector. Software version on TSC3 is 3.4.

"Unable to setup base at the defined location. The base location is more than 500 meters away from the receivers current location."

Trouble is all i did is move the base 40 ft to another control point to setup. Can anyone shed some light on this subject? If this is in the wrong place let me know and I can repost it properly. Base has been working fine until we had to move it.

This is my first post and questions so if it is not 100% correct I apologize in advance. All help is appreciated. My field guys are pulling their hair out and now so am I!

    Thanks.

    Dane.

I have forwarded the question to the SPS team - hopefully one of them will get back to you shortly

This forum that you are on is for TBC for Construction specific questions and information. I do not work with Field Hardware that much these days and the questions are better answered by that product team. I will for sure try to answer questions posted here, however Hardware and Field systems have moved on some since I was last involved with them, and I am no longer as well equipped to answer them as I used to be (Apologies for that)

    Hi Dane,

When setting up base at a control point, we use the autonomous position we get from the receiver and the control point's coordinate to calculate the distance between the receiver and the control point. If the distance is more than 500m, we display that error message.
So the issue could be the control point is wrong or we are not getting the correct autonomous position from the receiver. Please try a few things to get things sorted:
    1. Make sure they you're selecting the correct new control point.
    2. Before moving the base to control point, use a rover to do a system recheck on the new control point to make sure it's at where it should be.
    3. Try to do a base setup with LLH HERE option and then just redo the setup on the same spot to use the control point.  That might help get the base at least in the correct area first.
Also, SCS900 v3.4 is a pretty old version of SCS900 from more than 4+ years ago.  I would strongly encourage you to update to the latest version which is 3.74.  This most recent version has had many bug fixes and also a lot of feature enhancements that would likely be useful to you and your field crews.  And as a side note, it's likely that if you went through your Sitech dealer to open a support case, the first thing we'd tell you to do is to upgrade to the latest version.  . .

    Thank you Steve!

Yes we need to upgrade to the latest software. I definitely will give that a try. We found a work around by just creating a new site and re calibrating but that was time consuming. Thank you for your quick response! One question i have though is the 500m a vertical or horizontal distance. the control point we moved to was verified only 40 ft away but we were correcting and elevation error in the old control point of 1867.55 feet. Some one left out the 2 in the elevation number and was at 328 instead of 2328.

    Again thank you!

No worries Dane.  Glad you got things sorted out.

And yes, we look at the 3D or slope distance between the points, so if you had a 2000 foot vertical bust that would kick off that flag of being more than 500m away, even if the Northing and easting didn't move.
