Fat CAD line error, selection non-visible error

  • 1.  Fat CAD line error, selection non-visible error

This keeps happening over and over and I have to keep closing and re-opening TBC.

Keep getting fat-lined randomly which opening the new plan view fixes this issue.

Select a line and move the cursor and the line highlight disappears along with all the line grips so you can't move a line without closing and re-opening the software.

    Come on man...

Guessing this is in TBC v5.50?

What does "fat-lined" mean? (sorry, new term for me)

Once you lose the selection highlight and grip graphics, are they gone until you restart TBC?

Grips are gone until TBC is fully restarted. This is the biggest issue because it has to be a full restart instead of a new plan view on the fat line issue.

    Hey Tylor.

Not sure if this helps but my grips also go sometimes in plan view but i never have to do a restart to fix. If they go completely in a plan view I close down any functional windows open (ie a edit, move window). I will click on a string select edit then close the edit window and they come back on. If this doesn't work its normally always a glitch in the plan view. I then close down all open windows as before and open up a new plan view.

This has been an occasional issue for several versions now and I remember reading an in-depth explanation from Alan Sharp explaining that it is an issue with the 3rd-party viewer control used. Searching "bold linework" on the forum turns up some of the discussion. It has been posted about several times.

Personally, I fix this by opening another view of the opposite type (3D/2D) and close the one that glitched - I.E. if I'm using plan view and it glitches, I will:
    1) open new 3D view (you must have at least one view open - closing all views closes the project file)
    2) close glitched 2D view
    3) open fresh 2D view (usually fixes the glitch)
    4) close the 3D view I opened in step 1

The reason I use 3D view to fix 2D view etc. is I dislike getting 'Plan View 2', 'Plan View 3' naming - having all 2D views closed allows the naming to reset at the beginning.

Yip this has never been fixed. Bottom line is 'sigh' then open up another plan view. Get this issue daily. Have tried multiple suggestions from earlier posts

Fat lines when the disply blows out

    Open up a new view

I have tried changing the Advanced Graphics Display Driver but to no avail.

Interested if anyone else has found a solution?

Thanks for the explanation @Stephen Gibson and sample @Bevan Macdonald - that's a terrible problem if it's happening all the time.

I have been reporting this for years and nothing has ever been resolved. I did have some explanation about TBC using the same background stuff as other software- but they dont have the same issues. Furthermore, I just open a new plan view up and close the other-Its a very random problem

    Hi everyone,

Thanks for bringing this back up again, I understand the frustration.

A user reported this issue in the past and submitted their project and video proof but I was not able to reproduce the issue on my side. Since it's so random, it may be hard to reproduce/fix, but I've passed that dataset to a developer for further investigation.

If there are any developments, I'll try to pass that on.

    Thank you,
    Nicole

    Hey Nicole.

Thanks for the reply. Its kinda not random for me when its been happening on the daily basis for the past 2 or 3 years. Its painful in the fact that no other software has this problem. I have learnt to deal with it and open up a new plan window. For me i have notice it happens especially when joining line strings together in a large dataset.  Try testing with a large dataset with multiple imports ie 12da, dwg, csv.

This was the advice given to me back in May 2020

" This is I am told caused by a Graphics Glitch on the Hoops Graphic Library that we use in TBC to create the Graphics Views. I too have seen them, but not as much recently than as in historic times. It is a similar glitch that causes items that you select to be selected but not highlighted on screen - as you say the fix is to open a New Plan View and then you are goo to go until it happens again.

I am told that this Glitch can be more frequent if Hoops gets more clashes with your Graphics Drivers and this can be mitigated by some of the following

    1) Make sure that your Graphics Card Drivers are 100% up to date

2 Make sure that your Windows installation is 100% up to date - and run Windows Update and take all updates rather than let your IS department control which updates you get - I know that at Trimble the IS department releases certain Windows updates only and you do not get full Windows Updates unless you do it manually for example

    3) Make sure that your System is 100% up to date - take all BIOS and System Updates from your PC Provider eg Dell. and do that regularly.

Lastly use Support - Options - Advanced and try a different Graphics Display Driver if you are still having issues - mine defaults to DirectX 11 but you can override that and use DirectX 9 or Open GL or Open GL2 etc. and see if one of those approaches causes less glitches / no Glitches - this can be an effect of the age of your Laptop, the Graphics Card and Version and also the System of your PC that can cause Glitches - if you are fully up to date then you should see better performance."

Would be great to see if Trimble has worked on a fix

    Regards

    Bevan

    Hi Bevan,

Thanks for adding that advice to the thread! I'm really sorry to hear that you're still seeing this issue though. It must be really frustrating to deal with this daily.

If you're able to share one of your larger projects with me I'd be happy to take a look at it, just send me an email.

    Thank you,
    Nicole

Yes, I notice it a lot when using basic line commands like join/break on large datasets.

I can confirm the very same issue.
I can also confirm that the issue has been reported multiple times with no resolution.

Would sending in a log file immediately  after it happens be of help if this is possible?

This happens to me when I use my short cut command " Ctrl + J"  for the join command back to back.

I can confirm the issue as well. I have a new laptop, drivers, bios, and OS are current. Trying different graphics settings does not fix the issue for me. This bug has been around for a while now. I do the same as other and open a new plan view and keep going.

I will pay more attention to when it happens and try to reproduce it.

For me it happens most often after breaking lines.

Also seems to happen most often when a single line is selected. If I use polygon or rectangle select it does not do it.
